THe history of EDM can be summed up in a singe panel cartoon I once found:
A very large hanging bell with just the bottom legs and feet showing of a bunch of people standing inside. Outside next to the bell is a big guy wielding a large sledgehammer and is just about to strike the bell.

I'm not sure how the idea that EDM is loud is supposed to sum up its history. All modern music is loud. I saw Led Zeppelin in a 1000 seat student union concert hall in 1972 and I'm pretty sure that was much louder than any of the early house nights I went to in the late 80's and early 90's.
