Fast Progressive Metal Riffing
Hey guys! In this lesson we will focus on a couple of riffs that I recorded recently.

One of the interesting parts is that you will play over a 4/4 signature and then you will switch to the 7/8 one.

It will be a nice way to improve your timing and your technique at the same time.

Dream Theatre, Overture 1928
Welcome to the ā€œOverture 1928ā€ song lesson!

For me this song summarizes a lot of what John Petrucciā€™s playing is about in Dream Theater in an intermediate level.

You can find the nice open chords riffing, the palm mutes, the odd time signatures, the melodic solos, the shredding solos, the unisons and the overall great composition.

Thereā€™s nothing better than practicing an instrument with music that you love and for me this was one of the songs that really helped me go a step above from where I was at the time. It was a challenge that I was set to achieve that eventually made me a greater guitarist, so my advice is that you take it! Not only this but many other great tracks that are available here in GMC!

Melodic Metal with Classic Elements
Hi GMC,

This lesson is about Melodic metal. Bands like Dream Theater, Giant, Symphony X, Stratovarius, Helloween, Royal Hunt are typical for this genre. So i made a tune for you that perfectly demonstrates this type of music.
The rhythm guitar is focussing on really tight 16th rhythm notes, all played with downstrokes and some 32nd in between to give a few accents. So this maybe will be a challenge for you to keep a precise timing here.

The Solo is very melodic with some special phrasing, like slides, tapping, arpeggios, and high bending & vibrato! A cool ascending diminished run in the solo as well. So I'm sure there's a lot for you to discover. All a bit Dann Huff inspired. ;-)

Defining Armageddon - Solo
Hi GMCers! This time I thought I'd do something different and share a solo with you that I wrote years ago for a song called 'Defining Armageddon' from my band The Reckoning. It's a good example of how a few well placed licks can make a solo sound more complex than it actually is.

It's an up tempo solo which uses notes from the Dminor and Dm Pentatonic scale, with the occasional flat5th (tritone) thrown in ! The challenge in this lesson is more of a challenge of timing and phrasing rather than technique. There is a small amount of alternate picking, a mini sweep and some economy picking.. but rather than see them as separate technqiues, it is best to approach the phrases as pieces of music which require you to play a certain way. You might find that you play them with different picking patterns than me.. this is not a bad thing because the end result is the solo, not the techniques!

Pay attention to how the solo responds to the backing chords. In some places the notes echo the rhythm of the chords which enhances the relationship of the music and prevents it from sounding like a bunch of techniques played over some chords. This is what we strive for as musicians. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves: It's not always what we play, it's what we don't play!

Randy Rhoads Style
Hi GMC!

Welcome to my new lesson which pays tribute to the late, great Randy Rhoads. He co founded the band Quiet Riot and was making a name for himself on the LA music scene but he really came to the world's attention when he became the lead guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne, playing on the first 2 studio albums, 'Blizzard of Ozz' and 'Diary of a Madman'. Randy tragically died in an aeroplane crash in 1982 during the tour supporting 'Diary of a Madman'. A recording of a live Ozzy Osbourne show was released after his death in 1987, titled 'Tribute' giving fans just a bit more of a glimpse into Randy's playing and what he was capable of, although we can only speculate on what amazing music he would have gone on to produce. So, with respect and honour, let us pick up our guitars in tribute to this fallen hero.

Warren DeMartini Style

Welcome to my latest lesson!

This time it's the guitar playing of Warren DeMartini in the spotlight.

"Warren Justin DeMartini (born April 10, 1963), nicknamed Torch, is the lead guitarist for Ratt, a popular American band during the mid-to-late 1980s Los Angeles glam metal scene." - Wikipedia

To me, Warren's playing is like a combination of George Lynch and Eddie Van Halen. He uses slippery legato lines with the flattened 5th like Lynch and has a similar whammy technique to EVH. His phrasing usually makes use of the minor scale and minor pentatonic.

He often plays lines that put the same note back to back but played on an adjacent string. This can give a really cool disorientating feel.
