In the years following the first publication of the "MIDI 1.0 Specification" the MMA made numerous enhancements to MIDI technology and updated the specification document to reflect those changes. By 1996 the specification document was at "version 4.2", even though the technology was still considered to be "1.0".
In 1996 the MMA combined the Specification document with the MIDI Show Control, MIDI Machine Control, Standard MIDI Files, and General MIDI documents into a single publication titled the Complete MIDI 1.0 Detailed Specification, which reflected the state of MIDI technology in 1996 (see below).
