U2 Revolution - Mat Snow screenshot
2014 | PDF | 240 pages | 62.65 MB
A complete illustrated history of one of the world's most influential and legendary rock band, U2: Revolution is lushly illustrated with over 200 photos, two foldout timelines, and fresh interviews by rock journalist Mat Snow. Starting with their roots in Dublin in the late 1970s, where the four teenaged friends first performed and signed with Island Records, Snow follows the band through its debut album Boy, their chart-topping albums of the 1980s, their record-breaking tours and global activism of the 1990s, and their reflective reconnection with core fans in the 21st century. With a new album and tour scheduled for release in 2014, U2: Revolution is poised to become the definitive work on a band that has stayed true to its beliefs and passions, through meteoric success, public controversy, and an astounding forty-year working relationship.

With Passionate Voice: Re-Creative Singing in Sixteenth-Century England and Italy screenshot
2015 | ISBN: 0199382034, 0199382026 | English | 344 pages | PDF | 16 MB
Musicians in the 16th century had a vastly different understanding of the structure and performance of music than today's performers. In order to transform inexpressively notated music into passionate declamation, Renaissance singers treated scores freely, and it was expected that each would personalize the music through various modifications, which included ornamentation. Their role was one of musical re-creation rather than of simple interpretation–the score represented a blueprint, not a master plan, upon which they as performer built the music. As is now commonly recognized, this flexible approach to scores changed over the centuries; the notation on the page itself became an ostensible musical Urtext and performers began following it much more closely, their sole purpose being to reproduce what was thought to be the composer's intentions. Yet in recent years, scholars and performers are once again freeing themselves from the written page–but the tools for doing so have long been out of reach.

Light Come Shining The Transformations of Bob Dylan screenshot
English | 2017 | 232 pages | PDF | 1,5 MB
Bob Dylan is the prince of self-reinvention and deflection. Whether it's the folkies of Greenwich Village, the student movement of the 1960s and 1970s, Born Again Christians, the Chabad Lubavitch community, or English Department postmodernists, specific intellectual and sociopolitical groups have repeatedly claimed Bob Dylan as their spokesperson. But in the words of filmmaker Todd Haynes, who cast six actors to depict different facets of Dylan's life and artistic personae in his 2009 film I'm Not There, "The minute you try to grab hold of Dylan, he's no longer where he was."

Revolution in the Air The Songs of Bob Dylan - 1957-1973 screenshot
English | 2009 | 496 pages | PDF | 2,3 MB
The first of two volumes, this companion to every song that Bob Dylan ever wrote is by far the most comprehensive book on the words of America’s greatest songwriter. Here you’ll find not just opinionated commentary or literary interpretation, but facts, first and foremost. Clinton Heylin is the world’s leading Dylan biographer and expert, and he has arranged the songs–including a number that have never been performed–in a continually surprising chronology of when they were actually written rather than when they appeared on albums. Using newly discovered manuscripts, anecdotal evidence, and a seemingly limitless knowledge of every Bob Dylan live performance, he has uncovered a wealth of information about the songs, leaving no stone unturned in his research.

Swing Under the Nazis Jazz as a Metaphor for Freedom screenshot
2000| 224 pages | PDF | 11 MB
For a brief time in a Europe threatened and then occupied by Nazi Germany, jazz was heard as ubiquitously as rock ' n' roll is today. In a personal search for the story of that time, Mike Zwerin spent two years traveling across Europe talking with individuals who performed and enjoyed jazz in Hitler's dark shadow, including the Ghetto Swingers, a Jewish jazz band that "toured" Auschwitz and Theresienstadt; the Luftwaffe pilot who listened to Glenn Miller while bombing London; Django Reinhardt, the brilliant guitarist who refused to flee Nazi-controlled France; and many others.

Tonal Structures in Early Music screenshot

Dr. Collins has filled a large void gathering a strong field to cover this heretofore obscure field. She has managed to bring her subject matter into sharp focus for those of us who lack her music background without reducing content to the simplistic - and therefore trivial - level which would render it irrelevent. We are looking forward to more work by this promising scholar.

Editorial annotations and elucidations by Dr. William Drabkin and his translators offer additional insights.

Songs in Motion: Rhythm and Meter in the German Lied screenshot
English | 2010 | 256 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Qualities of motion and emotion in song come from poetic images, melody, harmony, and voice leading, but they also come from rhythm and meter-the flow and articulation of words and music in time. This book explores rhythm and meter in the nineteenth-century German Lied, including songs for voice and piano by Fanny Hensel née Mendelssohn, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and Hugo Wolf.
