Why White Kids Love Hip Hop: Wankstas, Wiggers, Wannabes, and the New Reality of Race in America screenshot
English | 2005 | ISBN: 0465037461, 046503747X | 240 pages | PDF | 0,7 MB
Our national conversation about race is ludicrously out-of-date. Hip-hop is the key to understanding how things are changing. In a provocative book that will appeal to hip-hoppers both black and white and their parents, Bakari Kitwana deftly teases apart the culture of hip-hop to illuminate how race is being lived by young Americans. This topic is ripe, but untried, and Kitwana poses and answers a plethora of questions: Does hip-hop belong to black kids? What in hip-hop appeals to white youth? Is hip-hop different from what rhythm, blues, jazz, and even rock 'n' roll meant to previous generations? How have mass media and consumer culture made hip-hop a unique phenomenon? What does class have to do with it? Are white kids really hip-hop's primary listening audience? How do young Americans think about race, and how has hip-hop influenced their perspective? Are young Americans achieving Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream through hip-hop? Kitwana addresses uncomfortable truths about America's level of comfort with black people, challenging preconceived notions of race. With this brave tour de force, Bakari Kitwana takes his place alongside the greatest African American intellectuals of the past decades.

OMG I love this...

how many times I see these punk little suburban tw3ts (or actually hear them)... too many times to count... they are the epitome of un-original, completely boring, average, mindless people.

Meanwhile, you always know it's them, cuz all you ever hear are those 808 hi-hats ticking away in some triplet pattern...

Like... WOWWWWwww... what a surprise?!!! you listen to hip-hop!!... (driving by all leaned back like "YOU HARD").

Yeah dude.... you're so thug. and a true nonconformist.

And they're always SKINNY AS FUUUU##KK.

But yeah... so all of em have short shaved haircuts... usually really short on sides but a tad longer on top. Worst of all is when the hair on top is gelled up and combed totally straight forward into little bangs... the most retarded look possible.
I finally can tune a drum set

Anyone actually read this? dude is racist as fuck, most of what he claims is fact is opinion and has no grasp to the contributions of all races when it came to the introduction of hiphop in the very late 70's and early 80's. He tries to shrug off much of this and tries to make it sound as a scientific of sociological issue but its not. Have fun for whoever reads it just know this dude really doesn't know shit and its just a racist slant on music disregarding all facts and history that contradict his opinion.

You can find this exaggerated sens of "identity" in many other genres.
It can be about skin color, the country you are from, about clothes etc...
There are people that dont understand that music dont have frontiers.

I have to agree with Lord Jamar to an extent when he said that white pople are "...guests in Hip Hop." even if it is a broad generalization, since there were many people other than Blacks and Hispanics, (who were the core founders of most of the Bronx movements in the 70's,) who played roles of varying importance in the birth of Hip Hop (in the cultural sense.)
Hip Hop is supposed to be a movement that is open to every race religion, etc.; it's supposed to be a community; that's part of The Fifth Element (not the movie.)
That being said, it doesn't matter who you are, if you don't know the history of Hip Hop and/or you don't respect the social struggle that the culture rose out of, you do not deserve to be affiliated with Hip Hop--simple as that.
I don't think white people and Hip Hop can't coexist, it's just that most white people freely pick and choose what part of a culture that is not theirs, that they want to adopt. You can't take on the persona of someone you're not (and a person many people in Hip Hop aren't either,) just because you have an identity crisis. It bothers me that MC's turned into rappers and rappers turned into mumbleheads who spit four bars about bitches, bling & lean, and don't know who Gil Scott Heron is. Likewise, DJ's became beatmakers and producers, and then ended up where we are now, with a single person, with an acceptably hard/street look to them, as "The Producer," who in reality, have a team of people making all the beats for them, and a seperate studio mixing and mastering the shit. These people diluting Hip Hop are not all white, and yet they domesticate and sell the culture to whoever will buy it.
So, since it's not just white people that are bringing down Hip Hop, the guy who wrote this (I read enough to get pissed at the dope who wrote it,) needs to take a good, hard look at the culture as a whole and how it got to where it's at now.
Nas might have said it best when he was speaking on his "Hip Hop Is Dead" album. "I looked around me and the culture that had been everywhere just wasn't anymore. Everyone was looking to other peoples bank accounts and whips to see who was winning and selling themselves to whoever came along. I slipped up to; I was on that same shit for a while, and that's not Hip Hop."
So, yeah...that's all. Sorry about the novella. Dumb shit like this gets to me.
