The first experimental multichannel magnetic tape recorders were developed by Ampex Corporation in 1040, using the Ampex Model 300. Early users of this equipment concentrated primarily on the development of stereophonic recording techniques, but it was soon apparent that multi channel recorders were opening the way to a wide variety of other applications.
