The 100 Best Albums Of All Time screenshot
English | Publisher: Hardie Grant Books, 2013 | 256 Pages | epub | 47 MB
Australia's three best music journalists - Toby Creswell, Craig Mathieson and John O'Donnell - have joined forces to tackle the difficult task of defining The 100 Best Albums of All Time. This book names the best albums of the last 50 years from across the globe.

It tells the storybehind the making of the album, where the album fits in the artist's career and the album's impact on the local and world stage.

The entries will feature new interviews with the artists and the producers/managers involved in the recording and the release of the album. Finally, here is a much-needed list of argument-starting top 100 seminal/influential/essential albums of all time. Let the fight begin!

This should be called "Best albums of all time according to Creswell, Mathieson, and O'Donnel", no? I mean, aren't these things highly subjective? Like, if someone asked me to make a list of best bands and musicians, I'd say: Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, Depeche Mode, Ministry, Nitzer Ebb, Kraftwerk, Jean Michel Jarre, Joy Division, The Prodigy, Einsturzende Neubauten, Laibach, Velvet Underground, Sisters of Mercy, Covenant and other similar bands to these that I like. I can bet they maybe listed just Depeche Mode and/or Kraftwerk from my list. Maybe Jean Michel Jarre, too? And they surely listed the "incredible" Justin Bieber and Beyonce, eh?

Why it is usually pop charts rubbish that gets promoted and listed as "best"? I'll tell you: money. The bands that make most money are considered the "best", eh? This must be just pretentious artsy excrement if they used this criteria.

Anyway, thank you so much for posting this Rotten Surfer! It's interesting to read this anyway. My taste is actually much much broader than you might think! Cheers!

Or in the humble opinion of...

what bothers me are the round numbers, never believe beady numbers, 10, 20, 50, 100, 1000. Why not the 79 best.

Once a housekeeper asked me if I did not think Richard Clayderman the best pianist in the world, I said that depending on the genre could even be, she threw me another defensive phrase saying that he was the pianist who sold more records worldwide, just in Europe he sold 60 million copies, something that someone else never did.

"In that situation I could only answer as 'John Locke' describes most people who are born, Tabula Rasa or Blank slate, they are the majority and earn low salaries, had no money to study, but can buy Clayderman's records, easy listening is easier to understand and do not demand brain storm. By the way, of course I would love to be his producer or his record label. "

I like this kind of book, to understand some authors opinions, not that I agree with them, but always notice that when the author is from a determined country, he always defends the people of his own country, which is a reflection of an ultra limited vision.

You are both right. It is subjective. Like every playlist is. Or album review. And I guess it must be like that. If I make a top 10 list I will put the bands that I like and groups I consider THE best and if whole world thinks different it just wont matter.

Playlists are good because if you like the taste of particular dj or radio host you will know him/her as a valuable source of music which is good for you ears and healthy for your hart and soul and you will always come back for more.

Yes, it's obviously subjective, but it's not the same if the selection is made from the criteria of individuals or group of individuals , in this case, than if it is determined by " What people would like to see in this list so we sell more of the book".

And as Hans said, how can it always be 100 or 10 etc... If these are the best albums in someone true opinion it would probably not come as "perfect" number...

Now that I've seen the list of this book, it does not seem to be to much driven by sales, or commercial reasons.
