Wilson Curia He is just known as a jazz piano teacher who became famous for publishing books on the subject, but the incongruity is great, he never recorded an album, CDs that could show his proficiency on the piano, not even in jazz or in the wonderful and spectacular Brazilian jazz piano literature, he never went on a musical tour, not even in his country, maybe because of his Slurred speech and a serious memory problem. But he had the ability to criticize musicians who even for Japan and who toured all over the world, made mistakes in criticizing extraordinary famous musicians like Cezar Camargo Mariano who toured and appeared on the biggest stages around the world. Pianists like Ivan Lins and 'Amilton Godoy' are others notable musician from Brazil, among dozens of others.

Not even Google has something about his bio, it's even difficult to know if he is alive.

But, the worst thing is that none of his students became famous, there are some who even managed to play here or there, but they took classes with other teachers after 'Wilson Curia', but they never went on an important tour or even stepped on the big stages of the world, most of his students play at weddings, pizzerias, steakhouses and restaurants in that country, and are still proud to say that they were his students.

As a Brazilian, I'm flattered by a comment from you, whom I admire for your deep musical knowledge. But Bossa Nova is more valued outside Brazil than inside, even names like Tom Jobim, Paulinho da Viola and Garoto.

Musical Evolution and Influence of Time and Space

Music can be likened to poetry when discussing concepts of time and space. For instance, the entire era of Baroque music was nearly forgotten and disregarded for over 80 years. It was a German composer, Mendelssohn, who stumbled upon extensive scores by J.S. Bach in a very old library. He then decided to reintroduce Bach's works to the public, particularly the 'Saint Matthew Passion Mass'. This revival was met with great admiration, leading to a resurgence of interest in Bach and the Baroque period in Germany. Without Mendelssohn's efforts, this musical legacy might have been lost to time.

Even today, there is a challenge in attributing certain musical pieces to J.S. Bach or other Baroque composers. Historically, scholars mistakenly credited works to Bach that were composed by others, like the renowned 'Minuet in G' by Petzold.

Similar to the Baroque era, Bossa Nova faced a similar fate. During its prime in Brazil, it achieved immense success both on stage and in record sales, capturing a global audience and showcasing exceptional instrumentalists like Walter Wanderley, Laurindo de Almeida, and Sérgio Mendes. Following the prominence of Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, the genre experienced a shift with notable composers such as Chico Buarque and Toquinho taking the spotlight. Subsequently, figures like Ivan Lins emerged, contributing to the evolution of musical tastes away from Bossa Nova.

As musical landscapes shift, new genres gain prominence. Geniuses in instrumental music like Hermeto Paschoal, Sivuca, Egberto Gismonti, and César Camargo Mariano reshaped the musical landscape. Every genre has its lifespan, with some genres, like Jazz and Bossa Nova, transcending borders and being erroneously associated with other genre like samba.

While musical preferences evolve with each generation, there will always be individuals, even in Brazil, who appreciate and cherish the craftsmanship of Bossa Nova.

Personal connections with musicians like Jeff Gardner, a New York pianist residing in Rio de Janeiro, highlight the enduring impact of music across borders and his disappointment precisely with 'Wilson Curia' who didn't even made a phone call to him, maybe because of his insecurity may hinder potential interactions.

I have here a true story told by Hermeto Paschoal, who meets Tom Jobim in the elevator in New York, believe it or not, Jobim's most famous song, Girl From Ipanema, was playing inside the elevator, when Jobim told Paschoal that he couldn't stand listening to that anymore, but, his own music and wanted to evolve towards the instrumental music path that Paschoal took. Hermeto Paschoal says this with a laugh, so you realize that Jobim himself was already noticing the natural wear and tear that happens in music.

But...
In some places Bossa Nova is elevator music, but in other countries it is high quality music to be played on stages and still sells.

Believe me, just like the music of the past is still alive in the big orchestras, of course to a much smaller number of people than Madonna's shows. Not only will 'Bossa Nova', 'Jazz' and Duke Ellington be revived again in 50, 100, 300 and 500 years to come. Don't get upset with contemporary times, because only good things will remain to tell stories. This will be the case with bossa Nova and Jazz and much of Rock that is already beginning to be revived around the world.

Thank you dude.
