Are you into this guy?
Have you ever heard him talk, sing or behave?
I cant imagine that there can be anything MORE to it,
then whether you are into what this guy does or not.

He's not some kind of MASTER of a craft, like Scorsese or something.
He's a POP MEDIA CREATION. He's not even his own creation IMO.
Chosen and CREATED, by corporate media monopoly's.

And gets a closet full of corporate award trophy's for that.
Which is actually PART of being a media creation.
Hanging ribbons around his neck.

BUT, maybe you can get some pointers, on how to BE LIKE THAT.
Latch onto a style, that is already made popular.
By just having a look at how he talks, sings and behaves.
...maybe you can get picked up by bob iger.

I just read his wikidpedia, doesn't have any of the crap you are talking about being a creation?

John Roger Stephens (born December 28, 1978), known professionally as John Legend, is an American singer, songwriter, pianist, actor, and record producer. He began his musical career by working behind the scenes, playing piano on Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything", and making uncredited guest appearances on Jay-Z's "Encore" and Alicia Keys's "You Don't Know My Name". He then signed to Kanye West's GOOD Music and released his debut album Get Lifted (2004), which reached the top ten on the Billboard 200 and was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

This whole "Master Class" thing is just a scum that tries to milk someone's popularity and naivity. You will literally get much more information from songwriters and composers from youtube. For example, there are priceless interviews with Bred Fiedel, all kinds of current producers and so on. They explain in details their production(songwriting, composing etc.) process.
You can also look up some books with quotes and interviews from similar group of pros. You know, even a simple and random web search is gonna have more value than this nonsense.

I hate the people behind this "Master Class" bs. They are full of s.

Hi, Lala, apart from Fiedel do you have any other recommendations? Especially any videos about building a song up from lyrics and the vocal melody. In terms of production I've found Tony Visconti interviews to be very fine (but I'm a die hard Bowie fan from way back)
Thanks

Honsetly, I've watched so much and read so much different people on that subject that I can't point to anyone specific.

But this was my takeaway:
I would suggest to start from the basics - conterpoint exercises. And don't forget to sing every voice you write. It'll take time, but you'll get a great foundation. Try Alan Belkin's book on the subject and playlists on contrapoint, he explains it quite well. Then it's all about experimenting with words and phrases, getting those that you like the most(for this you can look for "aesthetic vocabularies"(quality adjectives and phrases and so on) and use some software to map all those things(there's plenty of different solutions for mindmaping)) and do this alongside with singing, trying different articulations.
I would also suggest you "free analysis" of all the song you really-really like(or vocal parts only). What does it mean? Just write down everything catches your attention in the vocal part, what you like about this piece, try to understand what makes it so good and so on.

But, overall, remember that it's better to keep things simple. If you're getting confused and it slows you down, it's time to think if what you do is really needed or you just afraid of something.

In no way I'm trying to say that "it's all what you need". It's just how I view that. In the end of the day, use common sense every time you're getting stuck

Thanks, very concise and clear. I've a number of songs I've solid lyrics and a basic melody for so your suggestions sound spot on. All the best. PS I've been studying the endings of two songs for one of my own. Reed's Satellite of Love and Bowie's Free Festival - the arrangements on each are magnificent.

Just watched some of this and I think it's really good (in my opinion, anyway). Many thanks for the upload!

Aaraon Sorkin, Margaret Atwood, Natalie Portman, Neil Gaiman- nuf saud (if you recognise these names then you know what I'm talkling about) BUT I appreciate the pointer to Bred Fiedel. There's some fine interviews with Tony Visconti but actual song writers? They should get Tom Waits before he kicks off our mortal coil.
And yeah ,besides all that, thanks to the upper.
