Whatever music you make, and whoever you are as a music maker, there’s always more to explore in Live. See how you can go further with Live 12.

Play freely with ideas
MIDI Transformations
Create a variety of simple or complex variations to your MIDI clips: add ornaments and articulations, draw acceleration and deceleration curves, connect successive notes and chords, or simulate the strum of a guitar.

MIDI Generators
Conjure up melodies, chords and rhythms with new MIDI Generators. Give your chosen Generator custom constraints, watch it create playful and original patterns, and then turn the ideas it produces into your own.

Max for Live MIDI Tools
Max now facilitates even greater experimentation, letting you create new MIDI Transformations and Generators – either based on existing ones, or your own creations.

MIDI Editing Improvements
Arrange the order of a selection of notes by pitch, velocity or duration. Stretch, split, chop or join notes in new ways; shape the velocity of notes; transpose them into a scale; or add intervals chromatically or in key.

Keys and Scales
Set the selected clip’s scale in Live’s Control Bar to see its notes in any clip you create. Then edit the clip using scale highlighting as a guide, use the clip scale to transform and generate musical ideas, or sync the scale of MIDI devices and instruments to the clip being played. Any changes in Live will be reflected in Push, and vice versa.

Expanded probability
Assign a single probability rule to a group of notes so that the entire group of notes is played whenever the trigger is fired. Or select a chord and tell Live to randomly play one note from it whenever the probability trigger is fired.

Embrace and explore tunings
Follow your preferred tuning systems or try different ones more easily. Work outside the 12-tone equal temperament system, and access tunings with Live’s devices as well as any MPE-capable plugin.

Surprise yourself with the sounds you create
Meld
A bi-timbral, MPE-capable instrument designed for deep sound shaping that lets you create a wide array of textural and experimental tones with its two easy-to-use macro oscillators.

Granulator III
The latest iteration of Robert Henke’s granular instrument now has MPE capability, giving you expressive control over parameters like note bend, vibrato and glissando. Plus, you can now capture audio in real time and start manipulating it immediately.

Roar
Create everything from subtle and precise mastering-grade warmth to wild and unpredictable sound degradation with Live’s new coloring and saturation effect. Roar’s three saturation stages can be used in series, parallel, or even in mid/side and multiband configurations – and it comes equipped with a feedback generator and an extensive modulation matrix.

New Modulation Behavior
Modulation destinations are no longer taken over by the modulation source. This means you can still adjust the parameter being modulated, even after assigning an LFO or other modulation source to it, opening up faster workflows, more possibilities for performance and continuous real-time control of parameters.

New Packs
Lost and Found – A collection of sounds fashioned from unusual materials, percussive trinkets, unique foley recordings and expressive objects to infuse your productions with character and authenticity. Dig deep and create layers of decorative, expressive instruments, playful Drum Racks and rich sound effects.

Performance Pack – A set of innovative devices from Iftah that push the boundaries of performing with Live. Capture snapshots of your sets and deploy them later, control multiple parameters with layered macros and curves, extend performances with looping in Arrangement View and pre-arrange the structure of a performance before you have even recorded it.

Trap Drums – Southern hip hop pioneer Sound Oracle puts the power of his in-demand trap beats in your hands with a Pack of 20 crisp, futuristic Kits and Clips created especially for Live 12 and loaded with MPE functionality.

Golden Era Hip Hop Drums – Explore the gritty drums of old-school hip hop with the new beat-focused Pack from heavyweight producer Sound Oracle. Get your hands on warm, authentic-sounding Kits with built-in effects and enhanced MPE functionality, created especially for Live 12.

Work more intuitively
Stack Live’s Detail Views
View your devices and the Clip Editor or automation at the same time – so you can work without the distraction of switching between views.

View styling
Live 12’s cleaner, more minimal look removes visual complexity and keeps the focus on your music.

Mixer in Arrangement
Live’s Mixer, previously available only in Session View, can now be used in Arrangement View. Toggle it on or off with Mixer View Control located in the bottom right corner or via the View menu, and configure it independently of the Arrangement Mixer.

Mixer improvements
Live’s Mixer also comes with visual improvements that make it more accurate for detailed mixing decisions, and easier to read and control.

Browser Tagging and Filtered Searches
Search for your sounds in the Browser without the constraints of Live's built-in categorization. That means when you search for bass sounds, you'll see all the bass sounds in your Ableton library, whether they're samples or instrument presets.

Live 12's sound content is also tagged using a new system that acts as a more flexible alternative or addition to Collections in the sidebar. All sounds – including Packs – now come with sensible labels to make them easier to discover and find later – but if you need more detail, or just want to use your own method of labeling, you can also add your own.

Sound Similarity Search
Start with a sample and tell Live’s browser to find comparable sounds and instrument presets, with the help of machine learning algorithms

Drum Rack swapping — Swap all the samples in your Drum Rack for similar ones to quickly try out new percussive textures – like a drum machine with seemingly-infinite kits

Browser History
Retrace your steps, and see and hear the sounds or presets you've previously searched for — Live's Browser now lets you backtrack through your browsing history as you would with a web browser.

Accessibility and navigation improvements
Screen Reader Support – Visually impaired musicians now have access to core workflows in Live using Screen Readers or other assistive technology.

New Keyboard Shortcuts – Use new keyboard shortcuts to navigate to nearly every part of Live.

New Themes
Choose new themes and adjust them with cool, neutral or warm tones and even a high contrast mode.

As a celebration of version 12,
we made new Witches' Magic
which does not modify any original
binaries. The magic will work until
Ableton makes significant change to
their protection. You won't need to wait
our updates or seek other cracks :)

you should not be replacing anything, only dropping it into the ableton install folder, default is %SystemDrive%\ProgramData\Ableton\Live 12 Suite

are you using symlink versions? i noticed that all symlink vsts are now missing from my list. i think ableton has issues scanning those now.

It doesn't show VST2. After filtering Instruments/VST2 shows nothing. Scanning with ALT or switching off/on the Custom Folder doesn't help. I am on Windows 11. The genuine trial behaves similarly.
Other than that, VST3 plugins are organized independently of how I organized them myself, placing them in folders I created.

PS. I disabled VST3 folder and scanned VST2 folder only. Ableton doesn't show Creators themselves but Ableton and almost all the plugins. Few are missing. Something goes wrong with Ableton at the moment.
I will wait for the update.

Is anybody else missing the new audio effects like Meld and Roar? Same thing happened with 12 beta, I don't think this release is complete?

I downloaded the same thing you did and I have 'em.

The thing I'm looking for is the rainstorm thingy used in the demo track. Where is it??

If you searching for the demo track, then go to the Help tab at the top and there’s a button called “Load Demo Set”

Ableton, when Cubase has no features you need. oldschool cubase, they need to update. old men are keeping cubase down.

Can anyone comment on Win 7 compatibility? Ableton 11 worked fine.
  Member 23.02.2016 1 242

Someone mentioned it requires AVX2-compatible CPUs, so I guess any processor released before 2013 (such as first, second and third gen Intel i3/i5/i7) will not work?

Also, a guy on GS-forum reported that the (legit) Ableton installer tends to leave multiple gigabytes of unnecessary files somewhere deep in the ProgramData directory (Windows). At least that has been the case with v11 and I would assume with v12 too?

Here is forum comment about the issue:

Yes, you are right. I have found 26 GB of installers (?) of v11.

Wow! Thanks for confirming!

That might explain why I'm running out of disk space. I have to investigate the issue asap!

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download, too, keeps unnecessary files.

if you still need to use live 11 then dont update the packs or they wont work in 11, thats what i have seen anyway.

Any reason I should try V12 over V11 (11 seems to be working fine on my Win 10 PC) ?

anyone could suggest me the most stable version of ableton 11? please

i'd also like to know, there are some tuts for live 12 coming out, so, is there any huge difference between 11 and 12 that makes it difficult to follow the tutorial?
  Member 23.02.2016 1 242

I'm assuming that Live 12 tutorials will showcase features and devices (effects / instruments) that are new in Live 12. The basic workflow and interface has not changed at all, but for example the pianoroll has some additional functions in Live 12, that haven't been available previously. The browser has AI similarity search (which I already have, since I use a plugin called Atlas, that does the exact same and more).

Overall there is not much difference between v11 and v12. I wouldn't switch from a stable v11 installation to v12 just for the new features.

Sweet. Hoping my Mac brethren could have a crack at this eventually.

It probably will.

Has anyone else noticed this issue when you load a project from Ableton 11 into 12 and save it then it asks you need to resave it because of using the old Ableton 11 but when you save it simply by "overwrite the name" and bring the project back up again say another day in Ableton 12 it has not saved any progress, its still the same old save as the last one? does that make sense thanks. The only way around it is name your project a new name, overwriting the name does not work or save

should I uninstall the beta before installing this or can they coexist?
  Member 19.11.2019 58

in 11 i had an exact representation view of my vst2 plugins folders...now it is just one big heap of plugs wich makes searching a lot difficult. is this solvable? don't want to make al these filters....APITA or....?
thanks guys..
  Member 5.12.2022 120

Nope, not solvable. They've made a mess with this new bookmark system. I would guess its useful if you have 5 to 10 plugins, but as a audioz members we all knows plugins here are treats to try like in a candy-store, just a Waves bundle alone is a headache.
I wont say about the full release but with beta it rescanned ALL of my plugins everytime I've bookmarked a single plugin and it took ages so I deleted it to hell and went back to 11

For anyone having problems with this Live 12 version, check if your CPU is AVX2 compatible otherwise you will never be able to run it, you need a most recent CPU, after 2017 at least i think:

"5th generation Intel® Core™ i5 processor or AMD Ryzen processor (CPU supports AVX2 instruction set)"
Another thing: i read some comments about new Live 12 packs unauthorized, i just installed a couple of Live 12 packs and i don't have any problem, maybe if it shows as unouthorized is probably because your Live 12 app is not properly registered.

Still doing tests, no problems at all so far, i will update the comment after vst2 and vst3 scan if there's any problem with that.

One very positive thing i found so far: from what i remember it's the first time (at least for me) a fresh new installation of Live being so fast scanning vst2 and vst3 plugins at the first time (and i have a ton).

Edit: for some strange reason, after Windows updates Ableton was unauthorized, i found out that the "vcruntime140_1.dll" wasn't on the Ableton program dir anymore, i had to put it in there again, stupid Windows OS, all back to normal now.

Thanks so much! Everything seems working fine, except I can't find granulator 3 anywhere.
  Member 20.08.2022 57

Granulator 3 is a pack ableton.not included in ableton .you need to download it from latest Ableton packs.
