Passion Reflected in Every Detail
We placed the awe-inspiring Yamaha CFX Concert Grand Piano in Abbey Road Studio One, where award-winning engineers used the world’s greatest microphones and equipment to create a stunning virtual instrument library.

A truly remarkable virtual piano
The Garritan Abbey Road Studios CFX Concert Grand places the user on the bench before the Yamaha CFX, an incredible concert grand piano characterized by a wide palette of tonal colors and the ability to create the most subtle, expressive nuances. This beautiful instrument is matched with the stunning acoustics of Abbey Road Studios’ legendary Studio One and the finest collection of microphones in the world.

All facets of this project – the instrument, the room, the mics, and the recording expertise – work together to create the finest sampled piano ever captured. Experience the passion reflected in every detail.

The Yamaha CFX Concert Grand Piano
The CFX piano marks a significant milestone in Yamaha’s celebrated 108-year history as an acclaimed world-class piano maker. In 1991, Yamaha began its most ambitious piano project ever: to create a new generation of grand piano for concert, conservatoire and studio performance.

The result was the CFX Concert Grand Piano, a revolutionary new instrument that embodies the concept of beauty and power. The rich palette of tonal colors and musical voices the piano can produce characterizes its beauty. The power comes from the CFX’s unprecedented tonal projection. The development and evaluation phase of this remarkable instrument took almost 20 years. During this time, a 40-strong team of the world’s most talented piano designers, technicians, craftsmen and, of course, pianists deconstructed the concert grand and began rebuilding it from the ground up. Every aspect of traditional piano design was questioned, evaluated, improved and relentlessly tested. Once the design was nearing completion, multiple prototypes endured thousands of hours of secret testing at concert halls across the globe.

Each CFX is entirely hand-built by a small team comprising some of the world’s most experienced and skilled craftsmen. All materials are meticulously selected and refined to ensure unprecedented music performance in the most demanding of situations. It offers outstanding expressiveness for a truly musical performance. With enough tonal presence to be heard over the sound of a full symphony orchestra in the largest of concert halls, the CFX is truly one of the greatest pianos ever created.

Abbey Road Studios
Abbey Road Studios is the most famous recording studios in the world and a global music icon. Home to countless landmark recordings and pioneering advances in recording technology, the legendary studio complex has a phenomenal history spanning over 80 years, encompassing celebrated work by many of the world’s most famous recording artists including The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Kanye West, Elton John, Oasis, Elbow, Lady Gaga and Adele. Composers and musicians from around the world turn to Abbey Road Studios when they desire the very best.

Studio One
Abbey Road Studios’ Studio One is one of the largest and most beautiful sounding orchestral studios in the world. The space can easily accommodate a 110 piece orchestra and 100 piece choir simultaneously. Studio One’s acoustics are as famous as its location, offering a supremely warm and clear sound with a reverb time of 2.3 seconds. This makes it perfect for numerous types of recording, from solo piano to large orchestras.

Studio One is Abbey Road’s largest recording space and has enjoyed a remarkable history. Architects Wallis Gilbert and Partners decorated the original walls of Studio One in their distinctive art-deco style, which gave the room a darker sound than its current, superior-sounding incarnation. In 1931 the impressive room hosted Abbey Road’s inaugural recording session with Sir Edward Elgar, and has since hosted historic sessions by the London Symphony Orchestra and luminaries ranging from Yehudi Menuhin, Pablo Casales, Bela Bartok and Jascha Heifetz to Glenn Miller and Fats Waller. In 1967, Studio One played host to The Beatles’ famous performance of ‘All You Need Is Love,’ which was captured as part of the first ever live, international satellite TV broadcast.

When Studio One opened, it was used primarily by EMI’s prestigious His Master’s Voice (HMV) label and it continues to host classical recordings to this day. It is also one of the world’s premiere locations for movie scoring: the long list of blockbuster scores recorded in Studio One includes Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, the Lord of The Rings Trilogy and Gravity.

Presets
Garritan has worked closely with Abbey Road Studios to develop presets that are both functionally useful and inspiring to play. Research included artists and genres as well as notable recordings, cinematic settings and live performance examples to make the CFX as flexible and versatile a musical instrument as possible.

quote by Lionscars
quote by Olymoontooloud is simply underlining what seems to be a contradiction in what you wrote. No need to call him "smartass".

There is no contradiction in what i wrote. Any serious audiophile or piano player knows the difference between dynamics/response and tone. The piano has great dynamics but sounds cold. Where is the contradiction in that? Assuming he does know the difference between dynamics and tone, he sounded like he was obviously trolling me. So please don't try to label me as the bad guy here.

Tooloud is the real deal. I will assume that his definition of cold has much to do with the inability of a less than dynamic virtual piano instrument to exude the warmth and true feel of the artist, as does mine. "Cold to the touch" figuratively sums up much of the sample or emulations out there.

And mind you elders, you might learn something.

When you look at piano bulletin boards on the internet, you will find that a lot of pianists praise this instrument for sounding great and for being very "playable" in real time, meaning that it responds very well to live input, but for also having a "cold" sound. This is quite a common complaint. AFAIK this is not (only?) meant to claim that the virtual instrument as such is cold, but it means that the Yamaha CFX sounds very cold as an instrument to begin with when compared to Steinway grand pianos of a similar size and price. You'll find similar complaints when people talk about the VSL Synchron Pianos CFX, which pianist frequently claim is a bit more "playable" but sounds even "colder" (or some will say "clinical")

Thank you for the dialog and relating what you have read on the boards.

The warmest piano I ever played was so hot that I could barely touch the keys without burning my fingertips, the Borsendorfer 290.

Check it out, down to C0

Thank you for your support and your "tax deductible financial aid for my ummm.... sick father... may God rest his soul"
But seriously pianos are always about the right fit for the job. I had the stroke of luck many, many years ago at EMi studios, to record a track on Eltons Johns personal Steinway (while he was looking the other way). We played back the recorded track and wiped it and went straight to the Yamaha.

"Compact" Samples Installation Requires 24.5GB of free space.

If you want to move the samples after install:

Go to Library > Preferences in MacHD (or your hard drive name)
Open the "com.Garritan.[your product].plist" file.
Look through the file for the tag <key>sample_dir</key>. These tags point to the sample directory. You may see one or more of these tags in the plist file.
Change the path between the <string> tags that follow the <key>sample_dir</key> to match the current location of the library's samples folder.
Repeat step 4 for each instance of <key>sample_dir</key> in the plist file.
Save the file. Note: You may have to make a copy to save the file, and then replace the old "com.Garritan.[your product].plist" file in the Preferences folder with the saved duplicate.
Restart your computer and then try loading instruments through the ARIA Player.

It's unacceptable! Really, it seems by now moving libraries ought to trigger a prompt to select library location, as so many others have implemented this.
Thanks for the instructions!

[edit: oops i see you are talking Mac, so my comment below may be irrelevant, but i leave it for general tip for space management ...]

I chose my DAW Library hard drive on install, so I have not tested the symlink method, which usually works and is very quick to do.
A handy utility for creating symlinks (with easy option to add & remove from right-click context menu):

To modify the .plist file you need to open it with TextWrangler. It's free, you can download it from here.
You can't open it with TextEdit without breaking the content!

this is what you need really : Pianoteq 6 STAGE

here

the interactions between notes only can be modeled. problem with these sampled libs is that they record each note individually, hence the coldness.

pianoteq is the best out there realism-wise atm.

thanks for the share!

check this : comparison

garritan vs pianoteq. worth the 100gb difference?

Hi, it comes in 4 parts , just follow the installer or merge the folders ?

Should've unzipped into a main folder, with the install components and sample data folder first.
Think you have some more unzipping to do.

edit solution: I had to unistall aria engine and aria player then installed this.

Thank you but unfortunately this doesn't work for me on Windows 10 Pro.
GUI doesn't launch.
First message : "init: Audio Engine Start Error : Check Preferences. Maybe the current driver doesn't support this sample rate"
Second message : "CFX Concert Grand : Aria Engine loading failed: The file "C:\Program Files\Plogue\Aria\aria_x64.dll" is not signed"

same problem here, Win10 on Surface 2 Pro

Same problem here. Only working inside ARIA, and after downgrade ARIA Player. But it´s not better piano than HZP so nevermind. It works inside ARIA sampler. In all software I have about Garritan never found a crack for aria_x64.dll. Only these PNG files, and PNG file for this piano gives the message: "this card doesn´t belong to any installed product".
But it works.

Thank you, Talula! I posted the request about this piano library Oct. 2018, and now, my dream came true! I had tried that today, and it is working perfectly. Especially, factory presets are great, mic positions and the mixer are awesome too.

I might not need another library anymore...

Ok This works. Huge thanks to Talula.

1) The 13.9GB file includes the sound data that will extract to about 122GB during install. When you first extract the archive (4 parts) you get a folder called SamplesData that includes the compressed sample data as a single file. When you install the program this file is uncompressed to about 122GB. It's about a 6:1 ratio but it's the real thing so same file you get from Garritan. It takes a long time ( an hour) to install the sound data.

2) This piano sounds different than any other sample library, it's worth it to try out. The piano sound itself is definitely thinner than most, especially octaves 5/6 - but it's not necessarily bad. It's just another tone. It's different than all the Yamaha C7's I've played and trained on; the C7's have a nice bell-like tone in the upper octaves like the steinway D. This one is different, I don't think I've every played a CFX. I like the sound for the most part & especially liking the advanced setting, mic perspectives, direct/ambient mix, eq & compression etc..

3) For those looking to download there's no mirror and would take forever for slow download. However, take this opportunity to get the $6 unlimited fast downloads for 48 hours at uploaded. I downloaded it in an hour or less, and then I downloaded everything else I've been wanted to try.. very worth it.

Got it working and this thing really sounds amazing. And it's reduced price it's on my short list of next purchases.

Question...Does this use the same Aria player as other Garritan libraries or is it separate? After hearing the quality of this, I wanted to try the Garritan World Instruments on the site but don't know if installing an altered Aria Player would mess with the CFX.... Anyone have experience with this?
