Algonaut Atlas 2 v2.0.2-RET screenshot
Team RET | 26 Aug 2021 | 132.0MB
Algonaut has announced the release of a massive update to its Atlas software designed to turn samples into music.

The Atlas 2 drum machine and sample manager brings new features such as a fast and powerful Drum Sequencer, Sample Variation/Humanization engine, and a new Content Browser that makes managing and recombining drum kits and sequencers easy. On top of this there are hundreds of smaller improvements to every aspect of the original Atlas.

In particular the Drum Sequencer has been built from the start to be fast but flexible. The idea was to take the workflow-speed of traditional step-sequencers (like the much-loved FL-Studio one), but give it the extra flexibility of piano-roll editors when you need it. Get that idea down fast while itโ€™s fresh. then tweak in all the little flourishes that make a beat really come alive.

The new Content Browser shines once youโ€™ve got a few beats. Easily bring in patterns or sounds from other beats, remake and remix them, and build a library that sounds like you. Sometimes you want to just sit down and jump straight into trying song ideas and Atlas is now the fastest way to do that while maintaining your own style.

At the start of 2020 I set a personal goal to create a beat every single day in Atlas 2 while it was being developed. Many of the beta testers did the same. The result was hundreds of major and minor improvements along the way. Sometimes a button was too hard to click, or a feature was not accessible enough, or even some feature that seemed like a good idea on paper was just bloat in reality. It all got tweaked, finessed, or fixed.

How do people use this effectively? I've got a shedload of samples, and mapping the whole lot of them would just be insane. So do you organize by Sample Pack? By genre? Do you seperate your one shots from your loops?

Any tips on using this well would be really helpful.

I organize samples separately(loop? one shot?) and my folder structure is like:

And I put a sample like this:

This way make things easier to me, because one shots, loops and sfx are separated so if you also use ADSR sample manager, this may helps.
In addition, I make sub-folders for each sound types of samples e.g. snare, kick, hat close, hat open, riser, downer.
This makes ADSR Sample manager tagging correct.

Thanks, DickName. I've got way too many samples -- I really need to start thinning the pack. But that's a really logical strategy for organising stuff. I'll do some experimental adoption and see how I get on.

I used to use ADSR Sample Manager but I eventually uninstalled because I just didn't think I was getting much benefit from them. I might readopt though.

-- Splice Original - *****

Is this a way of organizing by the original sample pack, so you know where the samples originate from? So each Sample Pack gets divided into two folders, one for loops and for one shots? This might address the problem I had with ADSR Sample pack. I needed to be able to sort by genre and maker as well -- because that makes it easier to find stuff.

Finally, do you put all of your one shots into one great big drum map, or do you have multiple drum maps?

Again, thanks for your response. Thoughtful and helpful. All comments should be as good as yours.

Is this a way of organizing by the original sample pack, so you know where the samples originate from?

Yes. I organize by the pack. Naming folders like "Touch Loops - Organic Percussion" is just good visually.
But I never do like this:
Touch Loops/
โ”œโ”€ Organic Electronic/
โ”œโ”€ Organic House Sessions/
โ”œโ”€ Organic Percussion/

I don't like dive into folders deeper and don't like hide things deep.

So each Sample Pack gets divided into two folders, one for loops and for one shots?

Yes.

This might address the problem I had with ADSR Sample pack. I needed to be able to sort by genre and maker as well -- because that makes it easier to find stuff.

Adding prefix or suffix to folder name is one of opinions if you start working with ADSR SM again.
But it is enough just dividing into two folders for Atlas.

Finally, do you put all of your one shots into one great big drum map, or do you have multiple drum maps?

I prefer making one great big drum map because I love randomizer!
But hmm, it is interesting to make maps for each drum type.

Again, I'm sold. This was fantastically helpful, DickName. Organizing samples seems to be the bane of my life since joining this site. I've got so damn many and I don't want to throw any away. I've tried all of the apps that are supposed to manage them, but none of them have been really useful -- but I've always been aware that that was because the way I was organizing them on my hard drive was defective in some way or other.

Of course, my last re-organization was exactly what you say you don't do. Like:
- House
- Techno
- - Zenheizer
- - - Dub Techno
- - - Factory Techno
- - - Some other title
- - 5 pin media
- - - Techno Onslaught
- - - etc.
- FX
- Drums
- - Perc

But I don't like it. It's logically inconsistent and aesthetically incoherent. Your arrangement is something that's intuitively obvious to me, and is logically and aesthetically elegant. Not only do I plan on adopting it, but I'll also re-download ASDR have another shot with that. I do remember that always seemed like the most effective of the sample organization tools, and it bothered me that I never seemed to get the sort of use out of it that I thought I should get, but I think your sample arrangement system could change that for me.

So thanks again.

After playing around 1h with this new Atlas version i come to the conclusion that XO is far more better polished. In Atlas i miss some features. It is a nice little drum machine and we see us next year..

I think having Atlas paired with effects would put it ahead of XO.
The question though, is how is XLN gonna respond to this.

C:****/****/Program Data/Algonaut/Atlas but nothing.

you accidentaly added an extra / , no need to worry , happens to the best of us , even guys or girls that earn a living writing python or c++ code, occasionally it isnt even their fault, its some faulty mechanical keyboard , or some keyboard key stuck from hot coffee steam after all these years

make it this dir " C:/Program Data/Algonaut/Atlas "

I'm just old and my hands are shaking.
I've tried several times but it doesn't work.
It is the first time that something downloaded from the site does not work for me.
And that's why I think it's my mistake.
Thanks for your help.
I'll try again tomorrow.

a big + for XLN XO even tho similar is that it contains a 3000++ library of some really good drum sound recordings ,

Nice release thnx.

> No ASIO Support for Standalone (huge Latency for drums)
> Default Bank does not load
> Crash when saving a sequence i created

i can build own Maps but Atlas crashes while building them 50:50

thats it so far.

i guess this is another Beta release. Good we can test it here.

Working great except for the factory content.
I built my own map with my sample and work perfectly

Only install vst3 on Win 7 64bit ableton 11

meanwhile i just created a Bank out of the factory content and called it "factory content"
  Resident 6.03.2018 787

I did the same thing. Though it installs a shedload of drumsamples, I don't think it installs any Factory presets, so people who are looking for that stuff will be disappointed.

The lack of asio for standalone was kind of odd, but I'm only ever auditioning samples in standalone (and in the DAW too, come to that), so it didn't seem critical to me.

They released another beta version of their Atlas...

No ASIO support for the standalone either...
only DX and WindowsSound with huge latency..

the sequencer cant be increased in size

there is no "BACK" button after finding new Samples and Kits..
So if you liked one Kit or sample and you continue to look further you cant ever go back..

the whole program is half baked somehow

WHERE IS ALL MY MAPS I CREATED WITH ATLAS 1 ???

This is the second time in a short while that new updates mess with or delete user stuff ???

They where here:
C:\Users\NAME\AppData\Roaming\Algonaut\Atlas\Libraries

You could import them in the MAP view in the right top corner.

Now I'm happy :)

This plugin is incredible, the piano roll is fantastic, very intuitive, it reminds me a lot of the fl studio

The ui looks dope but presets do not load. Hence half of the ui's power is off. Will definitely wait for the next version.

Guys, if you have problems with the library not installing correctly, install the official version, download all the samples patterns etc and afterwards install the RET version. It will make the correct files and directories and it will also function without problems. I have it like this and it works.

I did what you said but didn't see any "samples and patterns" on the site.
