PSPaudioware PSP Wobbler v1.0.0-R2R screenshot
Team R2R | 21 Jan 2025 | 31.5MB
PSP Wobbler is a modulation effect plug-in, inspired by and developed in collaboration with the legendary recording engineer, producer, and musician Alan Parsons. PSP Wobbler faithfully recreates the sound of Alan’s secret weapon, the Frequency Translator - a handmade experimental device built by Keith Adkins, which created the unique modulation effect heard on β€œTime” from Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon.

PSP Wobbler uses frequency shifting to create non-harmonic phase differences that form a unique β€œwobble” with elements of phasing, flanging, and even a rotating speaker feel. It takes this sound well beyond the original Frequency Translator’s capabilities, adding controllable Drive, Ageing, Drift, and Spread, as well as tempo sync, a pair of EQ filters to control the effect’s frequency range, and more. Get ready to explore a range of modulation sounds that are as groundbreaking as the original hardware was!

FEATURES:
Frequency shift up to Β±25 Hz, manually controlled or set as a clock division of your DAW tempo

Frequency shift can be set to follow tempo changes or stay at a fixed amount through a song

Wobble amount is controlled via wet/dry mix

Drive and Age controls let you dial in saturation and character

Ageing modes for adding Drive / Age to wet signal alone or to both wet and dry signals

Separate controls for Feedback, thermal and voltage Drift, Phase, and stereo Spread

Adjustable lower and upper limits for effect frequency range

Me too! R2R are masters of audio. I usually check out all their releases. Most of them become part of my playlist.

It is me or does this thing sound like a couple of hundred other plugins that offer a small extent of time/frequency domain shifting ?

Right?!?! I've noticed a similar trend with compressors, nearly all of them doing nothing more than pushing down peaks, most of them with only slight differences in behaviour. But if that's the case, then why do people keep haunting this site for more and more and more... and then just a few more plugins? Wouldn't one of each be plenty?

Yes there are motherfucker plugins that would make most of these other marginal clones and copies obsolete. Basically in every conceivable category of audio processing. However those "mofo types" don't seem to be the ones getting the love from the witches so this is what we are left with.

I'm gonna be real with you, I don't have a clue what you're talking about.
I was tempted to write a small article on the pile of plugins available that are perfectly fine in every respectβ€”"perfectly fine" as in there's nothing about them that's holding you back from creating amazing mixesβ€”or that countless tracks were mixed constantly, for decades with less-than top-of-the-line hardware units of every type and still became beloved albums... but instead, I'll ask what the Holy Grail of plugins are that you're talking about. What's left to crack? You can't be putting UA on some pedestal of supreme divinity... right?

Alan said "reminiscent of what a phaser would do, but it's much more extreme.
It's much more controllable and , I think, a deeper effect than any phaser I've ever heard."
So, he leaves open all the phasers he may not have heard, so yes, of course there are many modulators besides "phasers that Alan has heard" that do phasing and a bunch of other things as well.

Counter-argument: Alan is being humble and has actually heard every phaser and phaser-like because he's been around the block a few times.

The first thing I thought....Alan Parsons needs money. Certainly not a bad plugin, it sounds good but the name doesn't make it any better. I don't like partnerships like that, see Hans Zimmer. But at least it increases sales.

Not to simply be polemic but just as comment - decades and decades doing this, I am as cynical as anyone, perhaps more so and am not one to buy into or care for endorsements myself - but I think that the PSP reputation and name itself brings them their sales and I hope it continues to do so for a long time to come.

Parsons has multiple streams of revenue and has had such for a long time and lists as the third wealthiest "audio engineer" today....even if that niche doesn't adequately sum up his talents.

Cheers.

I don't do disclaimers with "cynic" as a credential, I just assume that having been a musician and someone who's #%'ed with audio long enough, people naturally assume I'm cynical, salty, and generally wary.
But I'm with you on this. I understand marketing better than some from a wide variety of... we'll call them endeavors, assignments and gigs, throughout the years, and pointed marketing or bringing in known people or artists to promote or partner with something isn't always anything other than exactly what it is. Despite many famous instances that might seem to prove otherwise, not everything is an empty plug and not everyone is a shameless shill, some people either help develop or create a product with a company, or they were already fans of the type of product being made. And that's what seems to be the case here. Nobody thought Dimebag was some gimmick to sell the Warhead amp, because he was known for using different Randall amp over the years. Alan knows modulation and has albums to prove it, so why not approach him?

Alan certainly doesn't need it, and neither does PSP. So the whole thing is definitely just a project to make us all happy. I firmly believe in that.
