You know what it's like: Only an hour to go until choir practice and you had intended to compose a four-part harmony for your choir to sing… You have to do composition homework or a tricky analysis? tonica does this work for you in a matter of seconds! tonica composes four-part harmonies, canons, preludes, partita, fugues, Jazz standards and realizes figured bass.

While other programs try to delude users into thinking they are gifted composers with a primitive automatic accompaniment, tonica uses a totally different approach: Based on neural networks, tonica is actually able to compose in the style of the old masters. tonica will solve the same task in different ways. You will be surprised!

How tonica fugata composes
You compose the melody of a song, hymn, piece of music, canon or fugue. tonica fugata does the rest.

Figured bass for everybody
Only a few experts play figured bass from sight. Even if you know the "secret writing" it is not an easy task to play it. tonica fugata does the decoding for you…

A Jazz-standard in no time!
You enter the melody and let tonica fugata create the Jazz harmonies. It's as easy as this!

tonica has the groove…
tonica fugata comes with rythmic accompanying patterns in several pop music styles. Together with pop or Jazz harmonies you won't get a "strict" composition but a cool and easy song (tonica fugata contains all functions of tonica pop).

tonica fugata can help you with your own works
Evaluating your own compositions is easy: The program has been designed to tell you whether you have added the right notes to the chord in the four-parts, whether you have put the accidentals in the right places and whether you have made forbidden consecutives or other mistakes while composing your chords.

If you want to evaluate one of your practice harmonies, all you have to do is create two windows, one containing your work and the other with the file created by tonica fugata - it couldn't be easier! Forbidden parallels are automatically displayed in the notation. Chord analysis is carried out in the evaluation window.

Your analysis assistant
Just imagine, you are faced with a complicated analysis of a piece of musical notation, and you are unsure as to whether a chord is a shortened dominant sept-nonchord or just an extended sub-dominant triad. tonica fugata will take care of all your doubts at the click of a mouse. tonica fugata is also able to analyse exactly complete notations, which contain no function or level indicators, based on a tonal centre.

So if you ever wanted to know just what you or others have created, before you proudly present it to an unsuspecting public, or if you ever wanted to sneak a look at the masters, then tonica fugata's analysis function is the ideal tool for you.

When the first computer experiments began to reveal an unknown horizon, no one was yet discussing A.I.

In Germany during the 1970s, algorithms were programmed into computers to conduct the first experiments in counterpoint based on the techniques 'Johann Sebastian Bach' employed in his compositions. All it took was identifying the most significant melodic line composed by Bach—the one that supported the contrapuntal harmony—and pressing ENTER. The computer would then fill in all the notes that Bach's mind would have conceived in a mere 5 to 10 minutes. Remarkably, the computer from the 1970s took 40 minutes, but still produced results that were remarkably accurate, akin to Bach's own work.

Orchestra musicians performed the computer-generated counterpoint flawlessly, and the baroque music sounded good. However, they unanimously agreed that Bach's original compositions were far more beautiful, enriched with nuances in certain notes that enhanced the harmony. When they added other melodic lines (cantus-firmus) written by Bach, which typically remained in the lower register, the counterpoint was generated upwards. Even with this approach, while the musicians were reminded of Bach's genius, his original works still surpassed the computer's output in beauty.

Today, we have access to similar tools on our computers that can accomplish in record time what took me three and a half years to master. Notably, some prominent authors and analysts have identified numerous errors in Beethoven's counterpoint. Yet, these "errors" often sound beautiful rather than mechanical—did he make them intentionally? Some believe he aimed to emphasize the main melodic line, encouraging listeners to focus on it while overlooking the counterpoint techniques.

Here are the questions...
The Austrian Mozart practically only used counterpoint in his final Requiem.

The Italian Vivaldi ignored counterpoint in all his work, because it takes a long time to learn, but he uses it from time to time, and it is very good, according to the virtuoso musicians and scholars who play him.

The Polish Chopin said that these things from the past were useful.

This brings me to a question for some dumb academics on most pop universities:
"Why do drummers, percussionists, guitarists, or bassists need to learn counterpoint?"
