Team R2R | 2024.02.27 | 12.3 MB
The P455 MDN Sidecar is a summing and 2-bus mixing and mastering audio plugin capturing the analog chain of Marc Daniel Nelson, a two-time Grammy and French Academy Award-nominated mixing engineer, music producer, creative director and educator.

The P455 delivers Marc’s analog workflow which includes analog summing, tube driven stereo imaging, 2-bus punchy stereo EQ, custom glue 2-bus compressor and the unique character of two high end analog to digital converters.

The P455 MDN Sidecar isn’t just a plugin; it’s a calibrated blend of Marc’s seasoned approach and Pulsar Modular progressive audio design with focus on musicality at each step of the signal path.

For years, Marc Daniel Nelson has been openly and graciously sharing his techniques and expertise. He is now taking this a step further and delivering his signature sound to you, without restrictions or compromise, through the P455 MDN Sidecar and P450 MDN EQ audio plugins.

Seems Pulsar has bugs. Both this and TeamCubeidooby? Lol... anyway yes, both crash Reaper (win 10)... seems to be worse with lower buffer size although I cannot confirm that - might just be coincidence. Crashes seem to occur when switching the colour mode between Willie and Atticus or whatever their names are. Or switching between presets which change the setting. Perculiar, but I am sure that Pulsar will release a fix.

I really like Marc Daniel Nelson, in my opinion a top engineer, I'm curious to see if the plugin really delivers what it promises. The P42 Climax has been on almost all my tracks since its release. If the P455 is also such a good color box, then it can only be a success.

Thanks, Has anyone compared this to the Acustica emulations?

yeah first thing. well this workflow is much faster obviously but the same can be achieved with the saltzl-tigermixzl(or pink) combo. good to have this high end api emus, they feel smoother than ssls or neves. anyway, this plugin is top notch.

idk, there's nothing special about this plugin to me. it sounds boring as fuck. you might even be able to replicate its sound on your stock plugins if you try

pulsar modular is a bit overrated after their one good p42 climax

Well if you keep in mind some other algo API plugins out there this doesn't sound so boring at all

This is what I want to say. They are one of the most overhyped companies on the internet. Their EQ is dull and lacks clarity and accuracy. MD likes to color with Studer 800 and most of his sounds come from it. Forget your fantasies about analog equipment. This is just a digital tool and doesn't sound like an API at all

Why get so defensive over nothing buddy I never said this sounded like the real thing and you probably fantasize about analog hardware I sure don't.

By the way, about Acustica Audio... I deleted all my AA folders yesterday! I didn't really warm up to these plugins!

interesting. the Magenta, Pink, Sand, Gold, and Amethyst are amazing for me. That are really CPU intense so i cant use them like I want but I have them on multiple sessions now. That magenta on vocals is literally incredible.

yea but unfortunately some of them dont have 48khz support (Magenta). at least P455 as all sample rates

That is true but there is a workaround to this issue using oversampling and there is SALT too if you want an API that works at all sample rates..

No way you deleted all of em right...? Some of those plugins are really amazing but definitely not all of em But I also agree they are very CPU intensive which is why I switched to Reaper! all my CPU problems are fixed!

The above mentioned with ASH, JAM, AMBER, TITANMUIN 3,WATER, ULTRAMARINE/Midnight and Ruby are amazing and so far for me nothing beats COLA2 Comp on drum bus!

Reaper is the key for me too with AA plugins. It solves pretty much all CPU issues, and being able to freeze just portions of a track gives me lots of flexibility for CPU management. The AA plugins are definitely worth it. I agree with your picks. I would add Tulip. Opal comp, Taupe, El Rey, and Mystic to your list and the above list.

As for this Pulsar P455 plugin, I was pretty much able to use Pink 4 with Ultramarine to get better results fairly quickly. I am grateful that they released this though - the combination of API with Fairchild gave me some ideas to work with.

I wholeheartedly agree with you and your picks are also really great I made my list a bit tight nipped

Pulsar P455 is a good plugin if you keep in mind some of the other algo API plugins out there (I have not tested this against Sonimus which I don't have and the Softube American Class A) but I like the sound of the plugin if you look at it that way also its a bit different sounding from Slate Virtual Mixbus/Channel(which was my go to for years so Im still biased hehe). I would only ever use this as a summing plugin and use the EQ and Comp as a bonus. For me if I need an API it will always be PINK, SALT or AlexB

and yes, the CPU usage of AA plugins is also usually a problem for many users.

especially since we are talking about a clean variant here (thanks to our witches), I don't want to know what the ''unclean'' variant does to CPU

@Lokster,
i agree with you that some AA plugins are really good, but with 30% and more CPU usage for a single plugin on one track! that is unusable for me.

in addition, a really good and cleanly recorded signal needs only minimal processing, if any at all. therefore, even with less well-known manufacturers or free plugins , you are usually well served.

Finally got around to trying this plugin out. It honestly might be my favourite plugin of all-time. No joke. It's gooey and snappy at the same time, very rare in the ITB world. The movement is beautiful, it kisses the transient as it rolls along. Usually i only hear that in the analog domain. I've been searching for this sound ITB for years and years. Magic Death Eye was the previous Goo King for me but the P455 Sidecar takes the crown now. It's right up my alley. I don't usually do it but i will buy this once i have enough money, it's that good. ALL HAIL THE GOO KING

sounds really good. It's subtle, but you can tighten the potentiometers and it still sounds good.

One of the best plugins that's come out in ages.
People here talking about it negatively are probably expecting some preset to blow their minds.
I've never used a real api so I'm not talking about it as a simulation of that.
What I mean is that as a channel strip, rather than a mastering tool, it's amazing whether it sounds like api or not.
Read the manual, watch the video, make sure you understand the signal flow and what's happening when you adjust things.
The eq is extremely smooth and musical and the compressor is really quite special.
Give it a chance and it will reward you.
It's by far the most analog-sounding I've heard and a joy to play around with.
