Acustica Audio Lava 2023-R2R screenshot

Lava is a VST/VST3/AAX/AU Acqua plugin that accurately recreates the tones of classic microphones, including their response, harmonic content and proximity effect. With just a few clicks using this out-of-the-box plugin, you can make your own microphones sound just like the mics you’ve always dreamed of owning.

Instantly expand the range of sounds you can get with your mic, thanks to accurate settings from both vintage and modern microphones. Ranging from the cheapest, funkiest mics out there to the most exclusive, boutique models on the market, Lava includes a whopping 141 microphone emulations: 100 source mics plus 41 destination mics.

Just choose your input microphone, make a few tweaks using the intuitive controls, and you’re ready to go! Lava is the perfect choice for recording and mixing, and can even be used in broadcasting and podcasting applications.

We offer the Lava plugin in either a standard version or an alternative β€œZL” (zero latency) version, which is a great choice when tracking but requires extra processing resources. Consult the user's manual for more details.

Pretty cool pluing to give the samples or BG vocals classic feeling.

This should work well with Acustica Audio Lime 2 Tom Elmhirst console, the mixer who mixes Adele and Amy records at Electric Light Studios.

For those of you using fairly inexpensive mics for recording - like me - this one is a must. Makes everything sound better. I usually place Lava-Tulip Pre (for gain staging)-Taupe on every track and render them to stems as my starting point on my projects. I work generally with only acoustic instruments, and use only ITB, and work from my kitchen, so take my suggestions with a grain of salt. Anyway thanks again R2R!

How is the difference with Slate?

I've never tried the Slate one. I don't own a Slate mic so I can't really compare. The thing that I liked about Lava was that I didn't need to own a specific mic. I like matching the mics I own to Brauner mics for my upright bass, ELA on vocals, and one of the Neumann mics on acoustic guitar, as a start. I think in the end it's more of a sound sculpting tool than an exact emulation, but again I have no access to expensive gear to make any real comparisons. I just know that to my ears it does make everything sound better, more 3-dimensional. I hope that helps.

I have been using Slate VMS for years. Now I've finally been able to test the counterpart from Acustica. Is it better? Good question. Some microphones on LAVA are very subtle, sometimes you can't hear any difference when bypassing. Sure, there are more options and several models to choose from than with VMS. It definitely needs more CPU resources than Slate's VMS. In pumped up sessions that are already pretty much at max CPU level, it was difficult to swap VMS for LAVA due to the CPU load. In my opinion, both plug-ins can emulate the supreme discipline (the Sony C800) equally well. I can't say whether this is really at the level of a real C800, I don't have one, but I find the highs that come with it very pleasant.

This is the one I've really been waiting for, yes you cant add to something that wasn't there like a sm57 up to a 414, but if you have a low end condenser you can change that vibe in to a u87 u67. I have a NT2-A and I think it will work well with this software

But that does not seem to be on the source list . mine is not either , but I also have one which might be similar to one on the source list . i am still courios what it can do on an SM58 , maybe towards another dynamic

I've matched close approximations with happy results. Perfect - maybe not - but my threshold on these things is pretty low - I just go with "better is better".

I've yet to try any of the Acustica Audio stuff, will this install as is, or is there something else that needs to be installed first? Thanks

Something else needs to be installed first. Search for "Acustica framework"

This is one of the two plugins that I’ve always wanted to try from the Acustica Audio. The other one is the El Rey. So excited to finally got to try them now. Wishing good health and great strength to R2R so that we will continue to get all these goodies πŸ™‚

Really interested in trying this one out. I have a Townsend L22 and should be fun to compare their mic modeling app with what Acustica has done with this. Also will soothe some of my frustration with UAD who bought out Townsend awhile ago and still never released their most sought after mic modeling software in native form. Hopefully this Acustica offering will be good enough to make me forget about that once and for all.

Would like to try this one. Unfortunately it seems that there isn't the Shure beta 58A ("from" or "to" lists). There is only the SM58 that is very different. Strange decision from AA because the beta58A is probably one of (if not the...) most common live singer mic and from is always present in all the other mics emulator plugins.

Yes, you have to install " acustica-audio-framework-2023" first, I think.

This is the only AA plug I was interested in. Gave it a shot, it's very... subtle? Plus the big round dial on the left doesn't appear to do anything.
