Acustica Audio El Rey 2 2023-R2R screenshot
Team R2R | 2023.11.27 | 374.8 MB
El Rey 2 is the third plugin suite in our Diamond series. Created by Acustica Audio and Studio DMI in collaboration with multiple Grammy Award-nominated producer, songwriter, musician, and mixing engineer Greg Wells.

Audio Guru Greg Wells' Signature Compressor Plugin
Greg Wells is one of the music industry's most talented and respected engineers. He has worked with a plethora of international artists, including Katy Perry, Keith Urban, Adele, Mayer Hawthorne, Grace VanderWaal, Ariana Grande, Kelly Clarkson, Pharrell Williams, Dua Lipa, the Deftones, Twenty-One Pilots, OneRepublic, Aerosmith, Burt Bacharach, Celine Dion, and many others.

Take Greg Wells. Then, take one of the finest, most musical-sounding analog tube compressors and add a bit of voodoo to expand its capabilities, gradually transforming it into something extraordinary through a through process of artistic experimentation and technological innovation.

Now, put the two together. Through this alchemic process, the groundbreaking El Rey plugin was created.

Vintage DNA
El Rey 2 brings ultra-smooth, velvety, and unprecedentedly musical compression to the digital domain. Acustica Audio’s tech innovations and esoteric touch made it possible to transport the sonic soul of this unit from its original hardware into a world dominated by DAW-based studios. Now, it’s ready for you to apply to your sessions. Give your productions an articulate analog tone that you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else.

Signature Presets from the Industry's Top Pros
El Rey 2 includes crafted presets from Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum-certified audio engineers Dave Pensado, Joe Chiccarelli, Serban Ghenea, Jason Evigan, David Kalmusky, Alan Meyerson, Mark “Spike” Stent, Busbee and Mark Rubel. Combined, their album credits are so extensive that it would take forever to list them all.

What's new in El Rey 2?
We have taken El Rey 2 to a whole new level, adding powerful new tools to enhance performance and sound quality. Starting from this release (B), El Rey has become a plugin suite called El Rey 2 which now includes two separate tools, so please welcome the new entry, El Rey 2 Stereo.

New features:

1- Extremely well-detailed graphics to guarantee you the best possible experience and the same ease of use as the standard version.
2- Introduction of new controls such as Left-Right/Mid-Side, Control Link, Stereo Link, De-Bumpify.
3- Various plugin optimisations
4- Hyper technology

A witch says,

Library is completely decrypted, decompressed, DRM related bloat removed, and built to the clean one.

The developer explained that Virtual DLL trick is good to hide code from the cracker. However, for experienced crackers, it makes easier finding that hidden code. Because Virtual DLL
always need to call some Win32API like VirtualAlloc or VirtualProtect.

That's one of the reason why their protection is really hard just for beginner crackers and easy for experienced.

when i compare with compressors i have and match the output i hear NO difference! the attack and release is just not fast enough. This is more of a toy than actual production tool. You can tell because the fancy "analog" looking GUI takes up more space than 50% of the gui. i cant believe this is regularly sold for $294 ! LOL

save your hard drive and cpu and choose a competitive plugin instead

I've used a real 1950s RCA BA-6* compressor for a significant amount of time in the past, and it's a wonderful Vari-mu beast. I've also used El Rey2 and from my memory the sound and behaviour is virtually identical.

What other Vari-mu's have you put El Rey2 against? I'm curious.

I've always known the RCA BA series to have a distinct sound of its own. Particularly useful for smashing drums, drum busses or even the 2-bus.

match output and parameters with Pulsar Mu, Arturia STA and Black Rooster 426C. see if u can hear difference test against any of ur favorite compressor and they will sound better and use less CPU then el rey2

What're you compressing "slience"?

Yeah, actually this is a well know technique amongst audio engineers. 5db of gain reduction will give your silence more "warmth" and "presence".

kinda weird not hearing any difference from a plugin that is well known for adding massive smiley EQ on default. That Debumpify knob was introduced in version 2 for that reason only. lol.
It makes no sense to say you’re not good at it. It’s like saying, “I’m not good at being a monk.” You are either living as a monk or you’re not.

what plugins have you compared with El Rey 2? Match each settings and output and print the results and do blind test and see if you can tell which is which

the attack and release is just not fast enough

I think people stopped taking you seriously after you said that for a Vari-Mu style compressor. That kinda invalidate every single opinion you have. You are the one that should do a blind test or probably hearing test here, most of people here judging from the comments don't really have listening problem.

Man, we all hate what AA is doing but this plugin to my ears sound not bad at all and behaves on his way, strange that you can’t hear the good vibes from this toy.

To my ears this thing sounds great, it is quite obvious as soon as i open the plugin.
It just does not pump&jump all over the place like your usual VCA EMu DSP Compressor.
El Ray acts exactly like a tube based hardware comp like a Vai Mu for instance, it glues and adds that nice sheen on to of the overtones.
No need for level matching, auto-gain does its job 100%.

Maybe you should upgrade your Speaker/Listening environment or just take your time before conclusion.

AA Plugs are far from nervous and harsh that's why a lot of people dislike them at the first moment. AA Tech is def. no joke.

ps. i just installed the official demo of ElRay2 just because of your comments lately.
Maybe the r2r Version is buggy on some systems??

This is probably a top 5 plugin from Acustica.

Of all their compressors it's the one i actually really like. I bought v1 in 2019 or 2020 and i still use it today (which i can't say about a lot of their other plugins i bought back then). A lot of their compressors have sort of an unnatural "clicky" sound or something. This one doesn't have that.

It's great if you want to reduce dynamic range transparently.

It's got a soft knee so it's good for vocals

I also quite enjoy it on drums too, i like over-compressing with it so you get the squishy/pumpy sound, then using the mix knob to blend it in. Particularly best suited for "pokey" drums that need to be rounded out and fattened, i.e. jazz drums or hip hop or indie rock

Good on mix bus too sometimes. It's better on pokey stuff.

Here's a GREAT video comparing El Rey with Tim Petherick's Ra6: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cH23ropM5-I

you cant take endorsements from "Grammy Award-winning" people at face value. they are being paid for it. can you name 1 plugin that is bad and endorsed by Grammy Award-winning person?

its a good bus compresor.
punchy with analog sound . . .
(maybe not good for rap , hiphop or progressive metal . . .but in 80's music, dance or pop is a miracle)
i like a lot.

thx r2r

The Rey behaves more like an LA3A, they are almost identical in comparison even though it was based on the LA2A.... but the character it adds to the sounds is incredible...it is ideal for smoothing out the peaks and adding a characteristic shine to the sounds ...its harmonics are unique in their class...I bought the Rey 1 a long time ago and I'm only using it on vocals and uffffff the best... The Rey 2 is the same as the 1 unlike the Mid Side.. I highly recommend them.

If you go to gearspace, the dev himself tells people that the compressor is completely clean, no harmonics, because the people were complaining that it cant be driven. acustica litrally didn't baked saturation and they clearly state it

what you're hearing is placebo analog distortion lmao
