PS-3300 is an exactingly faithful virtual analog emulation of the colossal and ultra-rare semi-modular analog polyphonic synthesizer released by KORG in 1977. Cherry Audio has pulled out all the stops to accurately recreate and update this mythical monster synth, from its massive stacked sonic character and signature multiple‑resonator sweeps to the considerable patching capabilities that distinguished the PS-3300 from all other polysynths of the era.

Big in Japan... and everywhere else
Before releasing its renowned line of MS monosynths, Keio Electronic Laboratories (under the KORG brand name) introduced its Polyphonic Series of analog synthesizers. The largest and most expensive was the massive PS-3300, a legendary synthesizer produced between 1977 and 1981. It is widely considered one of the most rare analog synthesizers ever made, with around 50 units produced. With its semi-modular design, flexible architecture, and a propensity for rich, sonically evolving timbres, the PS-3300 is often regarded as the holy grail of polyphonic analog synths.

PS-3300's unique architecture set it apart from the handful of polysynths available at the time. It had three independent "signal generator" panels, each essentially a complete polyphonic synthesizer. Each of these synth panels included 12 independently tunable divide-down oscillator banks as well as independent discrete VCFs, envelope generators, and VCAs for every note. This enabled all 48 keys of the external keyboard to be simultaneously played with independent articulation. Dual LFOs and triple voltage‑controllable resonators for each generator further shaped its signature tone. A dedicated master panel featured a mixer with VCAs for each of the three voice panels, sample & hold, an additional envelope generator, and two control voltage processors. It also delivered extensive modulation possibilities through an astounding 67 front-panel input/output jacks. Taken as a whole, the PS-3300 was so powerful and revolutionary that even Bob Moog was impressed, stating that it was, "the best synthesizer for fat sounds."

The PS-3300's high production cost meant that only the wealthiest musicians could afford it, thus adding to its rarity and mystique. Its broad and bold sound, described as an orchestra of synthesizers, has made it a highly sought-after instrument by professional musicians and collectors alike. Its adoption by groundbreaking artists such as Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre, Aphex Twin, Kraftwerk, Klaus Schulze, Keith Emerson, and Space has further bolstered its popularity over the decades. Korg introduced the PS-3300 at $7,500 in 1977, and it is now so rare and coveted that one sold for nearly $100,000 in 2021!

Thanks for letting us try this without any strings attached.

But for cherry audio this seems to be an exercise in replicating the vast architecture of the PS-3300 and the modularity, not the analog sound?
It doesn't sound good,
it sounds surprisingly digital, thin, harsh. The new Roland Gaia2 digital oscs and filters sound more analog than this.

Has Cherry Audio paid a bunch of money so they can plaster brand names over their synth-edit VSTs, and the sound produced by them is an afterthought?

Well there's always the free FB-3300 from Full Bucket Music. :)

Agreed. The UI is alright, but the sound is very bland.
I have no idea how it's supposed to sound but FB-3300 sounds far more alive and analog to me.

oof, two people think freeware is better than cherry audio... must sting.

Can't say I disagree, though FB's not really known for analog modelling, he makes it clear he has no intention of accuracy, and uses fairly standard band-limited oscillators and such (I believe).

I don't know if it was an anomaly, but the Cherry PS-20 stood out to me (was one of the few cherry synths that I got inspired from a few sounds), and I ended up making something tasty with it. Maybe they're not super analog or super accurate, but I think the "quality" is good enough, a decent sound designer can get something out of it.

But yeah, if you want that organic analog sound, it's not gonna be coming from Cherry IMO.

The actual original unit is notoriously brittle and thin to be honest. We had one in a studio I worked in for years in the East End of London. We always beefed it up with a MiniMoog in the low end.
However, I agree that it is a pretty poor attempt overall. The free Full Bucket version is a bit better.
But I will say that CA has captured the cheap-sounding brittleness of the original quite well.
The issue with a lot of emulations like this is that most people have never tried the original to compare it against, so companies have a pretty much free reign to say whatever they want about it's accuracy.

Cheers for this version R2R. Works fine in Windows 10 and 11.

True but.. I do think Cherry has a certain sound & they tend to churn out a lot of synths so how accurate can they be? Also there is a similarity to the sound of their emulations IMO.

Ppl can't afford the real one ... and realise it sounds like crap too ;D

Frankly, i prefer ANY "modern" analog modular to this so called "legendary" sound.
It is only legendary because you can't put your hands on it :D

May be Cherry Audio succeeded more than you think ;D

Reverb has a listing of the real hardware for 91K 😲 who the fuck in their right mind to spend that much money on this.

Ahahahahaaaaa,
Who want to spend more then 1000$ for some -Salvator Dali- stuff?
Same question.

Somebody collecting. Only 50 PS-3300s were ever made.

The synth sounds like a fifty-year-old attempt at semi-modular analog polyphony. What else do you expect from a fifty-year-old polyphonic analog semi-modular? Those of us who were there can still cringe at the thought of jazz solos on an original Minimoog at cocktail bars the length and breadth of the country. People's expectations were different then.

You don't need hardware any more, whatever kind of sound you want. But I don't get the chills from Cherry gear.

It's true back then in 1977 the cost of the PS-3300 was 1200$ which is 6000$ dollars today and that would be for a brand-new instrument not used.

Just my two cents. Latest Cherry Audio products are not so great and have poor sound. Thank R2R for this gift.

Not *quite* the same.
Because Salvador Dalí tended to exceed his allegedly limited printed editions many many times over.

Korg had also: PS-3100 , PS-3200 , PS-3300 ... and the seperate PS-3010 Keyboard.

For us who never touched any real legendary hardware, these CA's emulations are great sources of inspiration. Also you can learn a lot by navigating through the interface.

Because it has less beef it will have more beef with effects. If you like beefy, deep bass from CA PS 3300 the plugin effects to use that will blow your speakers are ThrillMe by Disco DSP & New-B by Crysonic ...... Also G-Sonique Fat + and X Bass 4000. oh and pumpkin acoustic audio

To be honest, Cherry Audio are faithful to the original.
Have you played the original?
It is an impressive machine, but the sound!!! Heck!
No low end, sounds thin and uninspiring.

It takes forever to do a patch that sounds bad. Takes a CS15 and you are killing it.\
So do not expect a great sound based on its visual.

It is a great emulation of a failed Korg synth.
