Roland Cloud JUPITER-8 v2.0.1-R2R screenshot
Team R2R | 2023.08.09 | 28.5 MB
Aside from its iconic good looks and roadworthy build, the JUPITER-8 is famous for its unmistakable sound. Each of its eight voices had two stable VCOs with four waveforms to choose from, plus support for cross-modulation and screaming sync sounds. We couldn’t resist adding a few modern touches, like making it velocity-sensitive, extending the oscillator range, adding an effects section, and enhancing the onboard arpeggiator for extra flexibility. The LFO, arpeggiator, and effects conveniently sync to tempo, and the plug-in fits perfectly into your production environment with a freely resizable, high-definition UI and support for VST3, AAX, and AU formats.

Whether you’re looking for massive pads, huge basses, or searing leads, the JUPITER-8 has you covered. Use hundreds of new presets created by electronic music trendsetters. From synthwave to techno and beyond, this plethora of tones will push your compositions to the next level.

I do not want to enter into a debate, the sound quality does not depend on whether it is MAC or PC. They both sound the same. They are tools. It depends how you use them. For example, if you use Cubase or Ableton, is there any difference between using it on a mac or a pc? Sounds better on mac? I don't want to get into discussions. cheers.

how close are these software versions compared to their hardware?

about 75%... I've owned many of theses synths in hardware (SH-2, SH-101, JX-3p, Juno 60 etc) they are good for soft synths, and def 'sound like' the real thing BUT sadly they don't really sound like analog synths (even DCO ones) as they lack overall character and depth.

The digital ones like D-50 and JD-800 are a lot closer (Owned those for real in the past also) and can more than be used like the real thing (and with less noise).

I mean, I currently have a Prophet 10 rev 4, and the so-called amazing repro 5 (which is highly rated) still sounds like a plastic VA next to it... it shows the issue with analog emulations. They sound like a picture of the synth, not the synth, but they will get most people there musically anyway. I use soft synths for less important parts but will always mainly use my real analog synths first.

People who dance on the floor don't notice a difference.
and neither do many of us.

I agree. Most people listening to the beats aren't going to be sitting there trying to pinpoint how close or not these synths are compared to hardware.

It's not about the listener, it's about the creator.. it's about how inspired and excited they feel about SOUND, many of us can't feel that vibe with software synths (even if controlled by a keyboard) and it can have an effect on making 'worse music' vs using real instruments.

These days of course many 'musicians' don't actually play a note and it's all done by mouse, but as someone who plays guitar, keys, piano, drums and bass (And sings) I can tell you - in my case - soft synths are just another sound source, if needed, but they are often far from inspiring NOR do they push me to create anything special vs what I can get from the feeling AND tone of my real synths.

Everyone is different, not everyone can actually play for a start... but don't knock the value of the creator HEARING the difference in tones soft vs analog, and how it adds overall to the full production/song and feeling of worth behind even doing it. Your use of the word 'beats' shows you're already in the newer less bothered category... human music shouldn't be reduced down to the Big Mac version just cos it's cheap/easy imo.

Peace

that's nice and all, but the same can be said for soft synths.

i am consistently inspired by tons of my gotos, from z3ta+ to helix to fm7 to spire, and that's only the tip of the iceberg. even free synths like charlatan can get me in the zone. does it confound you how people genuinely like nord lead when it's a digital aliasing POS?

it doesn't matter, man. i can be inspired even by chiptunes. if you're skilled it doesn't matter. i hope what you got isn't contagious because it's a severe limitation on my toolset and wallet!

don't get me wrong, i'm a big fan of BOC and what they do just can't be replicated without dealing with vintage gear. you try and it comes off as a cheap artificial attempt, there's musicality to the analog signal noise coming out of the audio outputs of vintage gear, there's musicality to the magnetic tape, to the analog mixer boards. i get it. but that doesn't mean clean digital sound is inferior or an invalid choice.

This dude compared his Jupiter-8 to a System-8 (which uses the same plugin code), and his conclusion was that it's pretty close. The presets differ about the same amount that two Jupiter-8's would.

I'd say it's about as good an emulation as you can make these days, as it uses circuit modelling.

Obviously you can't please everyone. Analog machines that rely on chaotic phenomenon are not easy to simulate in computers. Even if we make a perfect logical copy, some will claim it lacks soul due to the loss of the chaotic aspects.
