Blackstar Plugins St James v1.0.1-R2R screenshot
Team R2R | 07 Aug 2023 | 66.8MB
Guitar amp manufacturer Blackstar have today announced their first software release, the Blackstar St. James Plugin. Created by the team behind their successful Artisan, Series One, ID:Series and St. James product ranges, the plug-in promises to set a new standard in the amp simulation world.

THE ST. JAMES AMPS
EL34
St. James EL34: Classic tones, British Crunch, jaw-dropping US cleans. The EL34 software amp delivers the warmth, chime and squash that define the sound associated with icons from the 60s. These channels offer the perfect pedal platforms and come alive when pushed hard.

6L6
St. James 6L6: High headroom cleans, iconic crunch, modern high gain. The 6L6 software amp delivers crystal clear cleans whilst Channel II Voice I offers modern preamp gain with a British-style passive tone stack, and Channel II Voice II delivers tight, articulate modern metal sounds with our highest gain overdrive circuit yet.

PRE-FX
The Pre FX draw inspiration from revered vintage effects pedals, capturing their unique interactivity and character that make them truly special.

Bridge the gap between hardware and software with unrivalled touch sensitivity and dynamics carefully designed into these pedals.

POST-FX
Add space and depth to your tone with Post-FX that deliver the personality of classic effects units.

Countless hours of critical listening resulted in effects that are both natural sounding and inspirational.

EQ
The Dept. 10 Equaliser is based on a renowned analogue rack unit famed for its organic sound and effectiveness in finessing electric guitar recordings. It features adjustable high and low cuts as well as four semi-parametric EQ bands with selectable centre frequencies.

CABRIG
CabRig is our next-generation DSP speaker simulator that reproduces the sound and feel of a miked up guitar cab in incredible detail.

Our new advanced algorithm simulates a speaker, cabinet, mic and room with incredible detail with effectively zero latency, no phase mismatch and with much more flexibility than a ‘snapshot’ IR.

CabRig for the St. James plugin is unique, offering a curated selection of 9 classic Blackstar speaker cabinets and 6 industry standard microphones. Get outstanding results every time, without any of the hassle.

A witch says,

* No iLok Driver installation is required to run.

* Our release loads faster and uses less memory than legit version.

Amp sounds too polished and nothing new compared to Neural DSP, so i guess i'm saying it's on that level, good clean and "nice" at the same time it's boring, at least for high gain tones.

you can get waay better sounding amps and mixes using "Neural amp modeler" plugin.
again each their taste, and i'm sharing mine!
Thank you R²R for the share appreciated!

Haven't played with this yet but I have to agree with you that Steve Atkinson's N.A.M. has some of the best sounds you could ever get from software up to this point. And its free. And I haven't even updated in for several versions. Still, I'm always happy to see new tools for everyone to use and I thank the teams that make them available for everyone to try. Thank you R2R!!

Actually, N.A.M. doesn't have "a sound" (a particular tone / timbre), since it's sound wholy depends on the capture and the underlying technology's ability to recreate the tone of the device being captured. Just like a convolution reverb (impulse response loader) doesn't have "a sound", but depends on the impulses that you use to create reverb!

So, yes: paired with a good capture, N.A.M. can produce superb amplified guitar tones. Still, I somehow prefer amps sims with nice GUI for their superior UI and UX as opposed to working with the limited and generic controls of N.A.M.

In my opinion at -Blackstar- they did a very good job high quality and unlike other well-known brands that insert (not rightly in my opinion) famous amplifiers and effects simulatios, here instead they cleverly used only sim. of their products and other famous hardware manufacturers will surely follow them in this direction.

hated the Blackstar amp bcos this one guy I dislike uses it and sound like shit. I didn't hate the plugin however, maybe the modeling isn't accurate. just kidding. Have yet to try everything to form a solid opinion. GUI is pretty.

1) no delay in front of the amp, need it for slap
2) can't adjust the mic position and distance which make the Cab section weak. I think all amp sim developers know that feature is kinda important if they offer two cabs.
3) annoying crackling sound on the amp tone stack if you adjust it when sound is going through it

the amp sounds kinda dead to me, no sure how to describe it, but maybe it's just me dead inside, can't tell.

Sounds a bit dead to me too. Doesn't sound bad at all, but it does lack a certain excitement / liveliness

In think the EL34 version is decent for low gain stuff, it sounds ok. But overall I didn't like the IR section, very limited and not very good sounding. The included TS/OD sounds awful. The reverb in the post fx sounds nice tho and also the included compressor is just ok.

I hate all the FX bar the post reverb - but I think the amps & cabs sound great if you dial them in right. All the presets suck but if you start from scratch and dial it in for your guitar it's another story. I was testing againt Tonex and was pretty impressed.

Sounds like my '70s Hiwatt Bulldog 50, but this really needs a resizeable GUI, the standalone crops the top panel and as VST3 plugin I lose access to the FX,cab,Eq section. I don't like changing my screen resolution because of just one plugin, when every other plugin is perfect, I hope Blackstar takes this into consideration for the next version, specially for us laptop users.

It is resizeable. Check the bottom right...there's a arrow near the Output knob. Click that and you'll see you can resize from 50%-200%

Maybe you could put together a small Neural DSP preset pack of your made and or favourite stock presets for the AUdioz crew.

I just got my 7 String fanned fret strandberg, ALI EXPRESS copy back from a Luthier I met on the weekend. So after 2+ years of lovely fret buzz etc,I now have a properly intonated and setup guitar!!! yay haha sik

I am going to check this St James out also,
(is the st james any reference to the metallica album> ?

I have struggled m/to get good sound out of amp modelling.

My best results have been through Helix Line 6 and funinly enough Guitar Rig 6
Looking for to Neural again!

I have a few of the Neural DSP also but havent ever tried them bcos disappointing $800 ali express guitar fail, now not fail!

Thankyou for your honest review it helps

OLY please dont delete me, Im coming back after testing this out ( mums asleep its 450 am here in Australia) so Cant be noisy right now

CPU hog and GUI not scalable! Sounds pretty good!

In my testing, in stand alone it was 1-2% CPU in Task Manager. Plus it does have scaling - bottom right, by the Output knob.

The GUI is scaleable and I can't get the CPU over 6%. Sounds great to me and love the interface. Thanks R2R, think i'll be buying this :)
