Voxengo OVC-128 v1.12-TCD screenshot
TCD | 08 May 2023 | 5 MB
Voxengo is happy to release OVC-128, a massively-oversampled soft/hard clipping effect plug-in for professional music production applications, available in AAX, AudioUnit, VST and VST3 plug-in formats (including native 64-bit support), for macOS (v10.7 and later), and Windows computers.

OVC-128 is a massively-oversampled soft/hard clipping effect plug-in for professional music production applications. A common use for this plug-in is hard-clipping before the final peak limiter. This is an effective approach in contemporary electronic music when loudness is boosted using a clipper plug-in while minor excessive peaks are absorbed by a final peak limiter that applies no additional gain itself.

Clipping the tracks via OVC-128 is practically similar to clipping using high-quality outboard analog gear. At 44.1kHz source sample rate, the internal audio sample rate of OVC-128 is a whopping 5.6 MHz!

A perfect combination for contemporary electronic music production is OVC-128 followed by Voxengo Elephant mastering limiter in EL-C mode. This combination produces both energy and smoothness.

Note that OVC-128 is a relatively CPU-demanding effect plug-in, it requires a higher-end processor for comfortable use. Performing 128X-oversampled clipping on a single stereo track is computationally similar to performing simple clipping on 1000 tracks.

OVC-128 features:

128X linear-phase oversampling
Clipping hardness control
Stereo processing
64-bit floating point processing
Preset manager
Undo/redo history
A/B comparisons
Contextual hint messages
All sample rates support
38 ms compensated processing latency

sounds better to me than kclip... thanks TCD, if it wasn't for you I'd never get to know this gem

Well, if you match their settings means, set KClip to 32x OS (because it's the highest) and both to hardest clipping, I doubt that. At least I couldn't hear a difference on various sources.
Additionally, OVC uses twice the CPU and a waaay higher latency. In my little test setup 1680 compared to 38.

I agree that it's a bit of a hog (I'd only use it on the master really) but it did sounded better to me compared to online x32 OS Kclip in the blind tests I conducted (only compared on full mixes). My PC can handle it just fine in my projects so I think I'll stick with it during master.

Haha, and everyone just saw "128x linear-phase oversampling" and grabbed it up, as irresistible as the amp that goes to eleven.
Nah, comparatively, it's beast on CPU, but it's still my go-to mastering clipper (I always feel like I should put that in quotes when referring to my music, "mastering." ) I really like the layout/workflow and the lack of visual feedback. Not for everyone, but a solid plugin.

Grabbed it outta curiosity, I'm not that interested in this class of "hyper oversampled" tools, I did indeed find it outrageous and ridiculous and decided to test it almost outta spite... can say I was surprised, the main difference in my opinion and abstract words that can't represent much: clarity and depth. It's particularly noticeable in the bass frequency range (but that obviously is related to the type of music I make).

So far I conducted only blind listening tests, I think I'll look more into it with plugin doctor.

@hormonemilz Voxengo's always quality, so this was a no-brainer for me (I actually purchased it a while back,) and despite having a few clippers, they do sound different. Depending on your material, especially if it's a full track (e.g., mastering,) as opposed to a drum or horns buss, they tend to showcase their differences a bit more. You can argue it's a negligible difference, but when it comes to mastering, I don't think you can be too picky. I make... well, whatever I make, it has a fair amount of bass in it as well (I guess it's kinda... Soul/Funk/whatever-the-fuck inspired Hip Hop?) so maybe that's why it's a go-to. I do use Kazrog's KClip as well, though. And Boz Digital's clippers for mixing. If I want color, I go for SIR Audio.

and in reaper you can 16x oversample this plug for up to 2048x. do this on all your computers- a great way to heat the house in the cool spring

@juxtaphon Pretty sure my PC hates me enough as things currently stand, thanks.
