Capstan – an end to wow and flutter
For over a hundred years, music has been recorded on mechanical mediums. And for over a hundred years, there has been a problem with this: wow and flutter. Who isn’t familiar with the wobbling and warbling, the droning and dragging? Mechanical degradation caused by defective devices or sticking tapes, by ageing or defective storage. In the past, it was usually impossible to get rid of wow and flutter.

Countless recordings of renowned orchestras, big bands and rock groups are currently slumbering deep in archives. Yet they are unusable, simply due to wow and flutter. The tapes worthless, the recordings lost to posterity. Until now.

For, in Capstan, there is now for the first time a program capable of removing wow and flutter from recorded music. Whether on tape, compact cassette, wax, shellac or vinyl.

Musical intelligence
The Capstan algorithm is capable of recognizing not only the smallest amounts of wow and flutter but also continuous speed variations within the musical material.
Capstan’s detection of notes and their fluctuations is based on the patented DNA Direct Note Access technology made famous by Melodyne, an application used in studios all over the world for the editing of pitch and timing. Unlike Melodyne, however, Capstan employs DNA note detection exclusively to remove wow and flutter by means of varispeed. It allows detailed editing that extends even to letting you draw in the curve by hand.

* No iLok driver installation needed.
* It launches faster than original version.

not very useful for someone using mainly vst insruments, or am I missing something?

This is notoriously one of the most expensive pieces of audio related software ever. Useful for a very specific application, and for that, from what I can tell, it's the best thing out there.

Well we have now same in iZotope RX 8 as WoW & Flutter module. And izotope on mine samples showed better results than Capistan which need to tweak manually for decent job. While RX8 does in single pass. I usually do some recordings from tape cassettes, which have big issues with wow

It's not nearly the same, in my opinion. iZotope RX 8's WoW & Flutter module is extremely slow rendering, does not offer intuitive graph interface, does not provide envelope drawing, does not have a real pre-listen (just clumsy diachronic compare), Overall it offers much less user control - apart from presets - a single control for flutter and just two controls for wow. The result is a more smeared sound, some occasionally introduced glitches and less efficient wow & flutter reduction.
But it's true Capstan craves for much more knowledge of what you are doing, and some manual work. Wow and flutter are the most difficult distortion effects to deal with in audio in general.

And what were you going to do with it? Undo RC-20 effects?

haha ....i bought two copies, as i'd bought it just before the update so sensibly bought it again to get the latest version.

Well i agree with you flutter module is damn slow, but wow is fairly ok and results i get are good, ratio of speed vs quality for wow module are good in most cases. I use capstain a lot while not rx8 came out. Now i have feel that wow is not problem and can be corrected with izotope really fast in single pass (also with capistan but i not love because always need manual tweaking of curve). But for other issues capistan or both in combination are must.

can you abuse this?
as in instead of taking it out, can you introduce wow and flutter into a recording with the plug?

You are pretty right about RX8 wow module, it does quite a fair job. Especially when you take into account its simplicity. It is usable, but still you have to wait to finish rendering to see what you'll get. And no doubt, with right settings, you'll get better results with Capstan in the end, but it can be painstaking (it is the case whenever you want a top result in anything, anyway) ...
Capstan also processes both flutter and wow in a single pass.

The fact that Capstan process both flutter and wow in the same time is precisely what I don't like. Sometimes wow correction is not needed or is falsely detected, and it needs manual corrections which are time consuming. If we had the ability to treat only flutter separately, it won't be needed to apply manual corrections. I always thought that Capstan (and now Izotope) should have a two separate selective tweakable bandpass detection filters in order to treat with less detection errors wow and flutter. For example, you would like to be seen by Capstan only frequencies around 10 Hz. So you would tweak allowed detection between 9,8 and 10,2 Hz, so that only 10 Hz fluttering would be detected and treated. This is so obvious, I don't understand why the engineers did not think about it at the beggining. I waited for years for those settings, but still nothing for Capstan...But as I did not buy this product, I cannot send an email to the Melodyne/capstan crew...At least with Izotope, flutter is treated separately. In my opinion, Izotope allowed me to save terriblly fluttered tapes that Capstan wasn't at all able to repair. On those cases, Izotope made a pretty job when Capstan gave only delirious and unusable results.
