OB-Xd is based on the Oberheim OB-X. It attempts to recreate its sound and behavior, but as the original was very limited in some important ways a number of things were added or altered to the original design. OB-Xd was designed to sound as good and as rich as the original. It implements micro random detuning which is a big part of that sound.

Overview

While not copying originals, some of the features were taken to a better point. Continuous blendable multimode filter (HP-Notch(BP)-HP in 12 dB mode and 4-1 pole in 24 dB mode). Also, like many synths of the OB-X's generation, the OB-Xd has no internal effects so its sounds and textures can be greatly enhanced by the use of additional processing like chorus, reverb, delay, etc.

from what ive seen its not free anymore, you have to have purchased some product or have the earlier free version, but i too wonder if the original file from their site needs a license or if you are a customer you simply gain access to a setup file just like this one.. i mean if this file here is the exact same setup file. if anyone know pls let me know. cheers

Not working for me in WIndows 10. Says the Themes folder is invalid and asks me to verify. It is exactly where it is supposed to be. Uninstalled. Tried this version and version from the website. No joy. Thanks to the uploader though. Let me know if anybody else gets the same problem or solves the issue. Cheers.

What happened for me on macOS is that the installer failed to install the folder with the Banks, Themes, Manuals and MIDI CC text. So I got a blank gui with a message.
I extracted the folder with Pacifist, and put it in:
Documents/discoDSP/OB-Xd.
This is not where any presets have ever gone before! But hey.
And the standalone and plugs found it, and it works.
AND I LOVE IT! It's great.

Backup "Settings.xml" file then delete it. Load the new version and it will generate a new .xml file.

a few things are sadly not so great , the sound is amazing and the plugin deserves a lot.
but learn function is only per patch. to go through presets its always needed to go in the little menu. no Program change commands accepted.
so yea it has a way to go but nonetheless possibly the best free synth out there!!

Anybody else have an issue where your MIDI controller Mod Wheel causes the fine tune control to move?

Cleared the learn but the issue still occurs. The same controller shows no signs of MIDI CC signals from the Mod Wheel other than the standard CC #1.

I really wish they had a preset browser with arrow keys (yeah, I'm lazy like that). Great sounding synth though, as previous versions were as well!
