Fakin' The Funk? is a tool that helps you to detect the true quality of your audio files in one batch. Nowadays you can download tunes from anywhere. But what is the real quality of these files? What if you could check those tunes to see if they’re really that good, and not upscaled 128kbps to 320kbps MP3s? You could batch-process them all without having to manually check them 1-by-1 using a spectrum analyzer?

Import your music files. Fakin' The Funk? will analyze the right bitrate and frequency. If it finds a wrong bitrate or lower frequency-peak, it will show you the actual bitrate. It’s up to you whether you want to rename those files, copy or move. Or just delete them. Fakin' The Funk? Keep it real.

Benefits:
- Automated batch-processing
- Easy-to-use interface
- Free (for the 1st 100 detected fake files)
- Cannot be fooled by audio-optimizers like Platinum Notes
- Besides fake files, it detects corrupted & unreadable files as well
- Supports all popular lossy & lossless audio file formats
- Ultra-fast processing using multiple threads to speed up the analysis
- Drag-&-drop support e.g. to Mp3Tag or Explorer
- Shows frequency cut-off, using its built-in Spectrum analyzer
- Listen to audio files directly, using its built-in player
- Translated manually into English, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, French, Swedish & Polish
- Supports 24 bit formats & samplerates above 48 kHz
- Tag-editor for the most common ID-tags incl. search & replace feature
- Optional clipping detection
- Configurable toolbuttons to search songs online (Amazon, iTunes, etc.)

Fakin' The Funk? is actually when you pretend you can hear a difference between 128 and 320.

To be completely honest, if your ears can't tell you if a file was encoded in 128 Kbps instead of 320, this app is indeed useless... at least for you.
But, please, be kind to do not inflict cruel suffering on those who will listen to your podcasts and other mixtapes.
C'est mon avis et je le partage.

Must not be listening often to jazz, fusion, prog-rock (among others) genres for saying such a thing, man.
Compress any track with jazz-type drums and distinct use of cymbals and compare it when compressed in MP3 128 and MP3 320: if you're NOT hearing any difference in the cymbals, you need hearing aid...

The upscaled thing cranked me seriously up. Someone tell this guy it's called resampled lol
Edited: reencoding!, my bad
[2009] Sorry for my English. I'm working on it

In the case of completed songs that stay the same song it's actually called encoding. Resampling just means using bits of other songs to create a new one.

Totally right, thanks for the correction. Mp3 bitrate has nothing to do with sampling frequency.
I was coming from yet another 48 vs 96khz thread and I mistook resampling with reencoding.

It gives a very precise picture of how good a lossy file was encoded (quality settings, actual bit rate, posible re-encodings). If you have more files of a same recording you can pick the best one and delete the rest, or search for a better one. For people who do not use lossy encoded files it may come as a surprise that some downloaded WAVs, FLACs etc. are in fact 'redressed' lossy files.

I remember downloading this last year and while it was pretty accurate, there were times it just doesn't make much sense. I believe it just checks the frequencies and then gives you the bitrate that gets there. The problem is that if you are checking audio with purposely rolled off frequencies you will get a random "320kbps MP3" in the middle or ten good files from the same origin. I might be wrong, though, that's just what I could understand from ten minutes or so using it.

I do not think one should dismiss a software that is very transparent, fast and objective in the way it estimates quality of audio files. If something was rolled off, on purpose or by encoding software, this program will notice it. It is up to users to take into account such odd cases like low sound quality made on purpose and keep such files. If someone feels this is too much for him, he obviously should not use this software.
