That was actually my first question, after Phil's Cascade accidentally ran into my arms on the internet. Who in the world is Phil and why do not I know him? I only saw transducers, tubes, a fat transformer and bakelite buttons and already my curiosity was awakened. It's that easy when the heart beats for frequencies and decibels. But what is that, a plug-in? Why then the elaborate photorealistic image of a real existing device? At least now I had to get to the bottom of the matter. The Elysia logo made me pick up the phone and I had him on the line, the initiator of this highly exotic project - Dominik Klaßen, one of the two owners of Elysia GmbH, the bubbling source for exciting analogue concepts. Selbiger had teamed up with some friends from the Elysia environment to make Phil's Cascade a reality. Well, you still do not know who Phil is, but that will soon be cleared up.

It was the idea of ​​Dominik Klaßen, and also his wish to be able to playfully experiment with circuit concepts and to carry out an effort that could no longer be justified today for a serial analogue device. In addition, the concept should be based on special, rare, 'historically valuable' components, which would no longer exist on the one hand existing environmental regulations, but on the other hand are not available in quantities that would suffice for a series. The core team, based on these ideas, consisted of Dominik Klaßen as coordinator and component procurer, Roger Schult as analog developer, Reimund Dratwa (Fuse Audio Labs) as programmer and Dirk Ulrich with his Plugin Alliance as a worldwide distribution channel for the plug-in. In. So again in order ... is an analog device with exotic components developed and built as a prototype to serve as a template for a plug-in emulation? That's exactly the case! In light of this approach, I wondered if this might be the distant future of analogue technology as a standalone piece of digital emulation and distribution? Who knows, I do not want to exclude it or introduce myself. Now back to Phil's Cascade. Dominik Klaßen went online to search and buy electronic components, mostly from a time when many of us were still waiting for their birth and even older students like myself still went to school. And so legendary brands such as Philips, Sprague, Erdmet, Wima or PSW were found to produce one thing in a unique prototype, one thing above all: harmonic distortion, because Phil's Cascade is first and foremost a cascade of rare Philips transformers combined with three tubes , also from Philips, of which only one is common in the audio world. Agree. Fuse and Black Rooster are amazing plug-ins, but PA plugins are very average (probably aside from the ones this dev helped developed for them). In general I find PA over-rated, cold sounding and with silly/tiny GUIs. They also just don't sound so good (same as waves that also rely on hype vs good sound)
