RP-Distort is not just a distortion unit, but much more. The distortion unit inside RP-Distort can be combined with an analog modelled filter, compressor and widener unit.

These units can be re-order, but also can be turned on or off. So in case you only want a great analog modelled filter... RP-Distort can offer this. Or only the unique widener unit which is great for widening a boring mono track.

On top of that, the controls can be modulated using midi sources or by one of the 4 build in LFOs that can sync to your host tempo..

Mono tracks are not boring. It's much easier to make a great sounding mix with mono tracks, just like we used to do for a couple of hundred decades. If you just use stereo, you're in trouble. Respect mono, and pan it around the final stereo mix judiciously!

I wonder if all this RPCX stuff still needs special emulators and protections? They have a ridiculous protection scheme that I'm trying to avoid. I haven't used a RP plugin since years because of that.

Indeed, too much stereo widening (by whatever technique one chooses to use; and there are many) can just lead to parts not having a location in the 3D space and a lack of definition worse than pure mono (not that pure mono should have a lack of definition; it doesn't if you know how to mix). Personally I rarely concern myself with any stereo positioning until late in a mix and will balance primarily in mono. I'm certainly no subscriber to the ethos of LCR mixing in modern music and stereo widening certainly has its place, but as are all mixing techniques it is no magic bullet and shouldn't be used unless one actually understands what is happening to the sound, particularly when summed to mono, or as you state SineWave trouble will likely lie ahead...
