A state-of-the-art music source separation software for your Mac and Windows machine

Welcome to the future

Released in 16/11/2022, it is currently the best algorithm for music source separation

It runs locally on your GPU (graphics card) or CPU

The version 4 consists of 3 models:
- htdemucs => default, splits in 4 sources (bass + drums + vocal + other)
- htdemucs_ft => the best one in terms of quality, but it takes 4 times longer than the "htdemucs" model
- htdemucs_6s => experimental, same quality as the "htdemucs" model, but splits in 6 sources (bass + drums + guitar + piano + vocal + other)

This guide will teach you how to install Demucs in your machine, step-by-step
It was specially made for the AudioZ community!

Supports:
- Windows 7/8/10/11
- MacOS 10.10+

Enjoy!

Nice. Glad it works!
The MP3 issue is because you still have an old version of FFMPEG (which doesn't support MP3), due to incorrect installation.
You can try "conda install ffmpeg=5.1.2 -c conda-forge -y".
If it still doesn't work, then I would suggest to start the installation process again from step 1 and follow it carefully, since other alternatives would involve a lot more work.

Thanks for taking the time to create this guide for how to install this stems separation tool!

For us with AMD GPUs, is there someone who tried to install demucs v4 on a linux machine that can integrate this wonderful win/mac guide with also some instructions for this combination of OS/GPUs? pyTorch exist on a linux OS (ex. ubuntu) for ROCm (AMD equivalent of CUDA) and on the Demucs github pages it seems there is someone who had successfully installed demucs v4 with GPU acceleration enabled also on his AMD GPU on a linux system. It could be interesting and very useful if someone who tried, can share his findings on this.

Many thanks to all and Happy New Year to everyone on AZ!

Hey, man.
Thanks!
AMD GPUs, it's a little complex for me... I don't have one. But maybe some friend do?
I will look into it and add it to the new version of the guide.

Happy New Year!

It's a good question.
I can try it in a few weeks.

For the Ableton users, definitely check out Factorsynth released here today!
Basically does the same thing and more and weighs only 40MB!

Hmm... I don't think they do the same thing at all!
But it's a very cool tool. With unique sounds and workflow.
Thanks a lot for recommending it

How does Factorsynth work?
Factorsynth is based on a modified version of an algorithm called Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF). Simply put, NMF can automatically extract interesting patterns from data. It has been used in fields such as computer vision and movie recommendations. I had to heavily adapt and tweak it in order to meet the real-time needs of music production.

It looks for patterns, not stems.
And use an algorithm intended for computer vision (that usualy runs at 12 to 60 times per second, compared to 44100 in music).

Isolate a synth track with Demucs and run it in on Factorsynth, the best of both worlds

Well, I can't argue with you on the technical aspect as I'm not too techie but based on some youtube demos I've seen like THIS one, it's pretty damn powerful!
Agreed, I haven't seen a video where someone deconstructs a mix in the 4 elements that typically many of the other unmix tools do (i.e. voice, drums, bass, other), but damn....in the above video it deconstructs the audio into virtually every single element in the mix!?
It's definitely similar and definitely very powerful...and comparatively very small!
