can someone explain in dumb-dumb terms what this actually does

It's like a clipper/limiter. This plugin was made in collaboration with Mastering Engineer Chris Gehringer. Even the plugin name itself contains his name "CGII" (CG stands for Chris Gehringer)
It's a mastering plugin. They call it a unique loudness tool to make your mixes loud. It's intended use is that you through this before or after a limiter on your master.
I suggest you try it yourself :)

It also only has 1.7ms of latency, so it's my new "always on" limiter on my mains in Ableton, so I don't have to worry about clipping when I'm just messing around being creative or playing live. Used to be TB Barricade, which was 2.7ms

If it isn't listed in the title or description, likely not - but you can always download and try it yourself.

If you want something else, you can submit a proper request for it here:

If one already exists, then feel free to comment about it there.

The marketing claims were greatly exaggerated for this thing, it's not like they reinvented the wheel, if you already have a good limiter this is an extra. Good to have, you may throw it here and there and in some cases it may give you a 1-2% better result. Doing some tests between this and other tools, I end up dialing them pretty much at the same loudness without even looking. The point where transients get crushed and distortion becomes audible stays the same, in some cases this retains a bit more transient, which can be achieved with an expander of sorts or one of the many tools working on enhancing transients. Side note: careful with it, it's quite noisy/dirty, I found only 16x OS to give acceptable results.

For those who don't bother to read accompanying instruction notes...

'Binary Information

Please note: These plugins are released as ARM-only AU (Audio Unit) versions.

This decision was made because AU validation passes consistently and reliably under this architecture.
While we also tested VST3 builds, they proved stable only within Cubase.
The reason lies in how different DAWs handle plugin validation and security checks.'

MBS have stated it is not a limiter but an asymmetrical clipper, I believe it only clips the low part of the wave form. It doesn't replace a limiter & is primary purpose is to make mixes that are already loud louder, so after the limiter. I have tested it extensively & found it works best on mixes with not a lot of transients in them, it can distort. quiet quickly after 2dB or so but you might get more. It can be very transparent. I've found that Rast Limo to be superior, I also played around with Apshaper & was able to get similar results. I think its a good plugin but I wouldn't have bought it, happy to see it here.

capable of pushing track to -2.5 LUFS without breaking

Does it sound good at its higher limits though?
y'all got anymore of those plugins??
  Resident 29.11.2020 29 3053

aint no way anything sound good at that level. I'm saying the plugin is capable of doing that the track without breaking it, meaning there's no obvious distortion or weird pumping.

Assuming the track is well-prepared to handle significant dynamic processing. The goal is to manage peaks and level everything out smoothly, without obvious volume jumps or pumping. Ideally, your mix should be able to achieve a loudness of at least -6 to -5 LUFS before applying any additional loudness plugins and pushing them to the max. While you might not always need to target that specific LUFS level, a well-mixed track should be able to reach that perceived loudness without sounding broken. If it doesn't, it often indicates an issue with your pre-limiting EQ or compression. You don't have to crush every track, but if your mix is solid, it should still sound good at -5 or -6 LUFS, should a client request that level of loudness. but at -3 or higher ? i don't think so.

A mix should achieve -5 LUFS before applying any loudness processing? You are reading too much crap on the internet

the irony is you didnt read what's being discussed here. "should be able" has a different meaning. "additional loudness plugins" means this plugin that was recommended by the creator to be used AFTER the limiter.

all for pushing the track to -2.5LUFS. if the track breaks at -5, obviously it cant go to -3 or 2.5 without breaking. duh
