Meet Velvet
A smarter de-esser for smoother vocals. Soften harshness and sibilance, dynamically shape tone, and remove distracting mouth noises and clicks – all in one easy-to-use plugin.

De-ess, de-click, reshape, and revive
Packed with features to help you dial in your sound, Velvet makes it simple to take vocals from raw to flawless.

Soften sibilance and dynamically shape tone with intelligently split Sibilance and Tonal channels. Instantly identify sibilant frequencies with Sibilance Learn, and precisely remove distracting mouth sounds, pops, and clicks with De-Click.

Intelligent de-essing
Transparently tackle those harsh, hissy sounds. Just hit Learn and watch Velvet automatically identify sibilant frequencies, setting up the 6-band dynamic EQ for you. And if you need any tweaks, easily adjust or add individual EQ nodes, scale with one knob, change filter types, and kiss those hisses goodbye.

Dynamic tone shaping
Shape your vocal signature by dynamically boosting and cutting, only in the right places. With independent Lift and Tame knobs, 8 target profiles, and frequency sliders for which parts of your target you want to mirror, dialing in your dream vocal has never been easier.

Intuitive De-Click
Clicks, pops, and other mouth sounds stealing the spotlight? Don’t worry, De-Click knows where they are and how to make them disappear. Just turn down the fader, watch the repair counter go up, and let your vocals take center stage as they were meant to sound.

Pro presets and more
Dive right in with 50 pro presets, then hit the Learn button to make them your own. Solo the Sibilance and Tonal channels, fine-tune the threshold to find the perfect split, and dial in settings without distraction.
Hear the difference with the global Delta button. And process in parallel with the mix fader.

Hear Velvet in action
Velvet isn’t just useful on solo vocals, it also shines on group vocals, dialogue, and even instruments and cymbals.

Considering how many plugins they have been releasing lately and the fact that they still haven't fixed the bugs in the old plugins that I reported to them back in 2019, I think Isotope is in a bad place and won't last long.

Not in a bad place, they're just following the Native Instruments philosophy. Great software ruined by growing profit margins.

So it the plugin actually good?

The mouth declicker is perfect, even turned up full it doesn't mess up the vocal.
Really good for dialect/spoken word/podcasts etc.
The deesser gives inconsistent results when used on auto but with some fiddling around it's a really good deesser. Very smooth.
The eq balancing thing is as crap as any other.
Let's be honest, they're all bad.

Has iZotope finally created something I will actually use long-term? Hope I don't fall off a cliff during the test drive...

Better than Soothe2?

Soothe, yes. Not compared to other de-essers though. Soothe mellows out everything, not just sibilant noises, while Velvet and other de-essers only trigger on sibilances. I could get much more natural results with the de-esser in RX (spectral mode) and good old Pro-DS. Maybe it's for people who don't own/subscribe to RX? Otherwise I don't really see the point in this plugin. Or maybe it's user error and I just don't know how to use it. The tone shaping part seems to more or less be the same thing as Ozone Stabilizer, i.e mostly useless.

I like my de-essers utilitarian, cheap on CPU and it can't take more than maybe 30 sec to insert and get the effect I want. RX de-esser module, Pro-DS and Sonible Smart:Deess are perfect examples of de-essers that check all of those boxes (except maybe CPU usage on Smart:Deess, but it also removes plosives so it's exempted from that requirement).

Don't forget TDR Arbiter both for de-essing as well as plosive control.

iZotope is now the official member of Plugin Diarrhea Group: A group focused on profit and care less about consumers.
Thankfully I left iZotope 4-5 years ago.
My policy is to stay away from companies which invest heavily in marketing.

That includes pretty much all the larger corporate devs in the group.
