Awesome! the Vu meter is so familiar tho 🤔
lets see how it performs next to TimP.

If Tim P used the same VU meter he borrowed it from the Retro hardware which was first manufactured in 2014 (so predates Tim P's software version) which itself is a homage reproduction of the original Gates hardware (has added attack and release times which the original doesn't and the ability to use two unites as a pair. The original 1954 Gates has a rectangular VU. Audioscape also makes a hardware version.
Music is always a commentary on society.

After comparing both on drums I found that TimP sounded much more natural to my ears. The attacks and transients in Kazrog Sta felt quite thin in comparison, and honestly neither of them has the authentic hardware saturation character.

The mixwave version is very nice if you didn't test it yet

I also tried that, but I think the Kazrog is better.

My personal favorite is Acustica SMOKE. Mind you, i've never used the hardware before

Interesting choice for drums, its not normally considered for that roll, primarily used for vocals & bass guitar.

comparison with the Arturia sta?
Software is like sex,it's better when it's free!

Arturia stands up pretty well, the harmonics between all 3 versions are almost identical in P.I. Dr. There's a slight difference in attack which I can hear on a full mix, I haven't tested on vocal or bass yet. The Arturia has some nice extra features. The Arturia vintage outboard were done by Pulsar Audio.

I generally like Kazrog, but I don't know what people see in this compressor in particular. Tried Kiive, Arturia, Kazrog, they sound very boring with boring/bad saturation. This one is also very annoying to level match.

Maybe it just doesn't fit my workflow since I use compression mainly for tone instead of dynamics, most of my tracks either don't get any compression or are leveled with a rider/APU loudness compressor (source > target)/manually leveled. This one from Kazrog is very gentle in tone compared to the crunch madness of Kiive's take on Audioscape's take on this comp.

* Perform an offline bounce pre-plugin to measure momentary, short-term, or integrated loudness.

* Apply the plugin.

* Perform an offline bounce-measurement of the loudness again and compensate manually to match the pre-plugin measurement.

Or use Fxdiff which is this, plus a plugin doctor.

is there some calibration? Probably?

Works on Catalina
I've only given it a quick test with some vocals, it seems nice and smooth
Understanding the single, double, triple thing helps a lot, so check the manual to see what that's about.
I never really took to this particular compressor, or at least the other plugin versions of it, but this one has a lovely creamy quality to the sound when pushed, so it will likely get used sooner or later.
Need to try it on more sources to give a better review, though

This is the magic of STA Level, it's more a vibe machine than a compressor itself. It gives some kind of thick gluey sound that works really well on parallel for smashing the input to the sweet spot. I don't know any tube compressor that has this behaviour, especially when combined with the release setting on the compressor. It's one of my favorite comps of life, but every software that i tested has some kind of flaw, while Arturia one is my favorite. I didn't tested the Kazrog yet, i may come here later to tell my thoughts

Arturia can simulate pushed hardware to some degrees but gritty tube texture is not there and sound is on soft side. kazrog on other hand won't even simulates the clipping. less mojo, different approach different sound.

When I was messing around, I noticed that each control affects other controls quite severely.
The attack speed, for example, affects the release, and then the single/double/triple thingy affects everything again.
At first, it seems a bit like spinning plates to dial it in, but then you realise that it's more of an instinctive compressor. As in, tune by instinct and just listen carefully to the signal as you adjust things.
I ended up with a beautiful, smooth and warm compression on a vocal, but I don't really know how I got there, so just saved it as a preset.
Seems there's some love for the Arturia stuff here so gonna check them out a bit more thoroughly as I may have overlooked them.

What does the Entropy slider really do?

It models the instability of old analogue circuits i.e destabilises the compressor's behaviour which causes minor fluctuations & changes.

never tried the real one, but these emulations of sta level are all different, kiive as-v comp and acustica smoke sound similar and tbh I don't like them aside that in vocals and instruments with no transient, this one sounds nice but behaves completely different, TimP library is idk... anonymous as sound, this one and acustica the only one handling well aliasing. I know arturia doesn't do a good Job at that but haven't tried the compressor though.

Been ABing the mixwave version and I prefer that one. Just sounds warmer and rounded but this sounds a bit crisper so will def find use for it. Also this version has sidechain input which is super handy.
