Plugin Alliance bx_refinement V3 v3.0.0-BUBBiX screenshot
BUBBiX | 5 February 2025 | 21 MB
Over a decade ago, Grammy Recording Academy member Gebre Waddell (Public Enemy, George Clinton, Rick Ross) worked with Brainworx to turn his idea to quickly and easily tame harshness into bx_refinement, a powerful and versatile dynamic EQ. It was an instant classic that many use to this day. The new bx_refinement V3 overhauls this essential tool for another decade in the DAW: new code, new features, greater stability, clarity, and control. Now, the simplest solution really is the best.

The original is one of my most used plugins, quite happy to see it updated.

I know it's controversial, but I really like the results I'm getting with it.

This, EndavorFX UnHarsh and Wavegrove Vastaus - my favorite deharshers. When used subtly and with care can really do wonders.

Sure - there will be those who'll say "but you shouldn't need these, just EQ your sounds right" and I agree, but once you do EQ everything correctly, adding a little bit of this as a final touch is the trick that gets you there 100%.

Ok, just wanted to write about proper EQ)))
mic! Just change it :)

100% psychoacoustics (I don't actually hear it, I think I do). But, anyway

"Harshness" - what is it from a scientific point of view? The current trend is for a sound that ‘my ears curl up into a tube’ (a Russian idiom, бггг). Are those harsh? Will this plugin help me to turn my ears back and bring me "The Harshness" as transcendency? The Question(s).

Like many terms used in audio, there is no precise scientific definition. Boomy, boxy, warm, harsh, etc, are all open to individual interpretation but the majority of people tend to relate to such sensorial descriptions and there seems to be a rough general consensus as to where those bandwidths lie.

I'd describe harshness as an accumulation of resonant peaks, in a manner similar to comb filtering, linear or non-linear, lying anywhere in the very wide area between 1kHz and 8kHz, which roughly corresponds with the most sensitive area of hearing, in accordance with the Fletcher Munson Loudness Curve. Harshness is a particularly suitable description under that circumstance as it relates to something that is generally uncomfortable and grating to the ear.

From a scientific point of view it is a perception coming from a bad listening environment.

If you do not like too much of a certain frequency from an instrument you tame it.
But all of those super special processors are just satifying perception fallacies. And most people adjust to their bad listening environment not to what's actually happening.

Well, finally there is a plugin which I don't understand at all. Even worse: to my (old) ears the wet signal is worse than the original. I understand "harshness", but I cannot hear how this plugin makes it any better. Since it is apparently a great plugin, it must be me who fails to understand how to use it properly. Or are my ears deceiving me?

What are you using for monitors or headphones. I can tell the difference. Perhaps that could be the issue?

Yes, definitely good point. But it is more that the difference I can hear is to my ears no improvement of the sound. Maybe it is to be used in a certain kinda music genre which is not so my taste? Or too old? Meh, I guess too old. Or maybe both.....

Soothe and Gullfoss are already top-tier for handling resonant frequencies in a more dynamic and adaptive way. This just feels like it’s just masking harshness instead of actually addressing problematic frequencies, and for me is not worth keeping in my chain.

I'm on 2k Adam Audio speakers and a pair of Beyer Dynamic studio cans, and this feels like snake oil I can hear perfectly fine, and after experimenting with it for hours, what it appears to do is far less desirable than what I can get with other plugins. I know a resonant frequency when I hear one too, I even tested some particularly harsh sounds in my library that could use taming. Gullfoss or Soothe handled them beautifully, while bx_refinement did sweet F.A. for me.

Deleted. Wouldn’t buy.

Soothe & Gullfoss use much heavier and potentially destructive processing. Soothe is a spectral plug and I believe Gullfoss is as well, and that brings with it its own artifacts. That being said, yeah, this one is total snake oil like the vast majority of Plugin Alliance slop.
The most consistent "de-harsher" I've tried is airwindows Acceleration2. TDR De-Edger & TDR Arbiter are also really good for this task.

is this a free upgrade for those who own the previous version? doesn't seem like it. And why v3? I have the original and it's V1.xx

Blah....
I tried this thing on some older live analog material that was recorded badly and it actually made the original material sound worse. Then I tried some rather harsh sounding synth patches as a test just to see if I could hear it do anything and I couldn't perceive it doing jack all.

Tossed this one in the bit bucket.

I'm glad I discovered this plugin. I had an instrumental recording where the cello had some very harsh tones in the upper register that stood out like a sore thumb. No matter how much I tried to eq them - although better - they still stood out occasionally. I disabled the upper frequency bands in my eq and put this on top. Wow. The cello sounds way more natural and blends well with the rest of the instruments, achieved in about 30 seconds!
