Plugin Alliance Brainworx SPL BiG v1.0.0 U2B Mac [MORiA] screenshot
MORiA | AU | VST | VST3 | 51.9 MB
Overview
SPL and Brainworx, the masters of analog modeling, are back with the plugin of SPL BiG. The 2024 TEC Signal Processing Award-winner, this studio stereo expander won praise from the pros for its huge sound and ingenious design. BiG is fun to use. BiG is distinct. BiG offers new imaginative avenues for sound shaping. Make your mixes sound massive with zero phase issues.

Go BiG or go home
Stereo image enhancement is an important tool for winning the loudness wars and bringing depth and immediacy to tracks. But phase issues have always limited the pros and put off the less experienced. SPL BiG solves these issues and lets you do even more. It processes stereo input with a unique filtering network that prevents phase shifts, cancellations, and unwanted artifacts when summing to mono. Now everyone can benefit from the bigness.

Push your stereo image into new dimensions
SPL BiG is a powerful stereo image processor that offers exceptional control over stereo width and character. Enhance individual tracks by pushing them wider or bringing them to the front of the sonic stage. Add analog tone for fresh, bold mixes. Use it subtly or aggressively to make keyboards, strings, vocals or full mixes as BiG as you need.

Depth and bigness with just five controls
With its three knobs and two switches, SPL BiG makes radical stereo image enhancement simple, satisfying and free of phase issues.

Range Control
Adjusts the filter frequency for precise control over the processed range.

Stage Control
Manipulates the slope and bandwidth. Make key elements of your mix feel more present or push them back to shift focus and create a greater sense of depth.

Bigness Control
Bring the β€œBigness”. This unique blend knob mixes processed and original audio with SPL's proprietary combining method, delivering dynamic control over stereo expansion and balance.

Simple on the surface but sophisticated at the core
SPL BiG utilizes a unique stereo processing technique that’s distinct from M/S processing. This is how it enhances your stereo image without introducing phase issues or cancellation to individual tracks, stems and mixes, even when summed to mono.

AirBass EQ plus plugin-exclusive features
SPL BiG also features a bass boost function, using a passive filter inspired by the AirBass circuit in the SPL IRON Mastering Compressor, to enhance your tracks with low-end warmth. The SPL BiG offers plugin-exclusive features including panorama controls, automatic gain compensation, M/S metering, and Mid/Side solo functionality.

Pretty pathetic really Strategic Yum audio Spread is superb, Izotope Imager is arguably the gold standard & this is frankly another pathetic release by the new NI owned PA. In these times this looks like something that was released about 6 years ago

ehh no offense bro but there's no way this has been out long enough for you to form an actual valid opinion about it already..

this is a different workflow and end result than both plugins you mentioned. its also SPL, which who knows how much they are actually involved in the creation of the plugin, but their hardware is highly regarded. if this is anything like the hardware, im sure its a nice addition to the arsenal

First off I own the hardware, and this is pretty darn close to that. Secondly, this is not anything like Imager so don't know why you would make that comparison. The hardware unit alone is the only piece of gear I know of that does what it does. "Looks like something released 6 years ago" lol, you mean looks just like the hardware? Go figure. Thanks for your zero cents.

I also have the hardware and they definitely nailed the sound. The expert section is a nice addition for the plugin format.

no presets for VST3 in this release, only for AU

Goodhertz Mid Side is much much better imo.
Many more natural sounding options + the "below Hz frequencies" aka mono maker can be adjusted from 0-100% width.
This here sounds artificial.

iZotope is gold standard? For who? For whack mixing engineers? Haha just kiddin, although I deleted it and don't like it although I bought Ozone legit (not even using Ozone any more)...cause I don't like the hyped iZotope sound much...

Try Goodhertz MidSide if you want a good yet natural sounding widening effect.

I don't actually use Imager Superhero123, most of my clients use it. Yum audio SPRD is my go to, truly excellent. The problem for me with this is that in this day & age I want a multi band spreader with panning, that's the point I was trying to make. So that's my valid opinion folks, not enough frequency bands to get clever with spreading

Yum Audio? Huh. I haven't tried much of their stuff, but I was unimpressed with what I have tried. If you have a thing for multiband spreading, I'd recommend NUGEN Audio Stereoizer3, which besides being clean, has some very cool features not to be found elsewhere, or DJ Swivel Spread, despite it's clunky/ugly UI.

iZotope clearly is not gold standard, but Imager is top.
The other 2 I would put on the same list with it are definitely Goodhertz MidSide and Leap StageOne 2.

Yum SPRD is shitty. Try turning off the four bands and you'll see that your track doesn't sound like the original. Phase issues and poor crossover implementation will ruin your track before you know it.

DjSwivel has pretty much the same story as Yum.

NUGEN Audio Stereoizer3 is magic, but if you don't know how to use it carefully, you can create so many disasters.
TDR SlickEq M, besides being a mastering eq, gives you 6 bands of spread and panning, highly professional is one of my absolute favourites.

Thnx for the tip. Ill try this TDR plugin 4 sure.
This one is not that bad, but not that amazing too.

Tried this plugin with acoustic guitar. The image tuned out to be OK but generated some high frequency distortion which I reduced by applying oxford suppressor. Need more time to play with this thing.
Also as somebody has already noted - VST3 presets are missing.

Thanks MORiA!

high frequency distortion confirmed – located in mono (center) area – no way to modify this within the plug ... thanks John!

i have high expectation to this plugin. Unfortunately this is a big let down. It sounds like it just boost the side signal with some haas effect. Can't apply it to tracks with natural result.

Also the volume bump when pushing the bigness knob is ridiculous. I know it has a auto gain function at output knob. Still it is so ridiculous to add few dB volume when i just want the image to be widen

is clearly that @Damann is speaking only as a stance against PA and NI.

Apart from that I too would like to say that the original SPL is one of the best and most acclaimed stereo expanders by professionals.
