Prepare yourself; depending on their generation and associated genre, you'll find a lot of people who'll debate on whether or a not a sequencer is an instrument or an effect.

I think it`s a Sequencer that sends Midi-Data to other Instruments, not a Midi-Effect in the Mixer-Channel that manipulates Midi-Data coming thru.

Instrument - Generate Audio Signal, Also can Generate Midi Signal
Audio Effect - Manipulate Audio Signal (There are also Audio Insert Effects which can be routed to different tracks and combine audio signal from routed tracks, for ex. Compressors)
Midi Effect - Manipulate or Generate Midi Signal (It can be putted directly on the track to manipulate/generate midi signal on this track or can be routed to manipulate/generate midi signal for other tracks)

So to classify something as Instrument it must generating Audio Signal as basic thing. Which gives conclusion that Sequencer is an Midi Effect.

And Midi Effect must be putted directly or routed to the track with Instrument or to Midi Signal Type Track. Same as Audio Effect must be putted on the track with Audio Signal or on Audio Signal Type Track directly and/or routed as insert.

for the purposes of fl studio, vsts are classified as effects or instruments. this determines what they can and can not do. in fl studio, all sequencers must be classified as an instrument or fl studio can not route the midi properly.

After reading the blurb, I couldn't tell what Automata does... not exactly, so now I'm actively trying to convince myself not to waste a portion of my day playing around with a tool that I *probably don't *really need.
But, even though I use Youlean, Stage looks capable, well thought-out, and I like the GUI—simple. Plus, it has a demo and the dev doesn't seem to be trying to dig too deep into your wallet. All selling points.
