AudioGridder is a plugin host, that allows you to offload the DSP processing of audio plugins to remote computers running macOS or Windows. This can come in handy when mixing complex projects or running CPU intensive instruments for instance. AudioGridder comes with a plugin and a server and supports VST2, VST3 and AudioUnit plugin formats. Plugins can be hosted and accessed across the network: simply run the AudioGridder server on a remote machine and connect your DAW using the AudioGridder plugin. This allows you to add remote insert chains or instruments into your DAW's signal paths. The DSP code of the loaded remote plugins will be executed on the remote machine and the remote plugin UI's will be streamed over the wire. With AudioGridder you get an experience very close to hosting the plugins directly in your DAW but not using your local CPU.

SERVER
The server supports VST2, VST3 and AudioUnit (on macOS only) plugin formats and is available for macOS and Windows. There are multiple possibilities for your setup. It is suggested, that you dedicate each server instance to a single remote DAW workspace. That is because each server can only stream a single UI at the same time.

The server is implemented as tray application on all platforms. Just click on the tray icon to bring up the settings, plugin manager or statistics window.

You can run multiple parallel UI user sessions on macOS and Windows. Setup a user for each remote workspace, create a UI session (via VNC, note that RDP might not be working reliably with AudioGridder) and run a separate server instance in each session. You need to assign a different server ID to each instance (in the server settings). In your DAW you can address each server instance from the AudioGridder plugin via “server[:ID]” notation.

PLUGIN
The plugin is currently supported on macOS, Windows and Linux as VST2, VST3, AAX and AudioUnit (on macOS only).

With the AudioGridder FX plugin you can plug a remote insert effect chain into your DAW’s channel inserts. From there you can insert any FX plugin available on the connected server.

Instruments work similarly. Create a software instrument track in your DAW and select the AudioGridder plugin as instrument. Now you can load any of the instrument plugins available on the server.

Each AudioGridder plugin instance will connect to a single remote server instance. But each separate loaded plugin instance can connect to a different server, so you can connect to multiple servers from your DAW at the same time.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
AudioGridder Server runs on a computer hosting your effect and instrument plugins. On your workstation, on which you run your DAW, you use the AudioGridder FX or instrument plugin to access your plugin library over the network. The plugin is looking for available servers on your network and once connected allows you to create insert chains or load instruments. Midi and audio data from your DAW will be streamed over the network, processed on the server and streamed back.

To control a plugin and adjust its settings, AudioGridder is capturing the plugin UI on the server side and streaming it to the client. At the same time it is capturing mouse and keyboard events on the client and replaying them on the server.

Alternatively, AudioGridder supports a Generic Editor, that allows for direct access to the parameters of a plugin.

I have been using it since Day one. It's a great idea and well developed.

how do you use it? if you can share

with a second computer or in the same computer with certain settings? Because I have read that it can also give more CPU power even if used in the same computer as a wrapper or something

thank you and thanks hidera for sharing!

I think when a DAW doesn't utilize multi-core CPU (properly), AG can help in it redistributing tasks. So in the same computer it can also be a very useful tool.

i use it in the same PC, WIN10, Studio One 6. I can use a lot more VST with this one, great!

very interesting! can you share briefly how you set it? or maybe an artcle or video where to see the settings? thank you!

it's very easy! Install AG Server and AG Plugin. Open Server (Scanning your VST folders). Open your DAW and load the AG Plug-in. Now you can load your VST's inside the AG Plug-in.

I found this some time ago and it's very promising. Try it!

I'm using Windows as server and Linux as a production computer. Just need a couple of Windows plugins... and to offload DSP56300 VirusC.

Has anyone also ever tried Blue Cat Connector for the same purpose in comparison with AG?

I tried to emulate what AG does with Blue Cat Connector. For me it was horrible results, pops and clicks were so bad that it was unusable. AG works very well so far both on same computer and a server computer.

So... I could run a daw on a pc and have that thing host a mac plugin on a mac, inserted into the pc-daw? Cool!

Yes you can!

I think that the comparison target is not "Blue Cat Connector" but "VIENNA ENSEMBLE PRO".

yesssss ! Vienna Ensemble pro version all instable!

I'm using AUDIO GRIDDER it on the same computer and it's beautiful, and you can load many more vst, but be careful who can tell me something about the latency that is introduced for each inserted plug-in? ??

I'm gonna give this a go with an old AMD Athlon PC that's sitting here gathering dust.
As far as I can understand you can offload FX processing via ethernet from your main DAW to another PC on the same network. I've never got round to trying it out but hopefully it'll free up some resources. I've got an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X in my main system so not too shoddy but as they say, "every little helps" especially in larger projects!

Can this be used by two computers that are not connected to the internet?
  Resident 4.09.2013 256

Yes, as longas they are on the same network. The network doesn't have to be connected to the internet to be able to use it. Would only advise to connect through ethernet cables both computers to the same router for speed and no interference in signal 👍

Normally the app doesn't need internet to work, excepting to check and download an eventual update.
As long as the computers are connected to the same lan switch, and they all have the same dhcp server and the same gateway, and they have an ip address like this:
Pc1- 192.168.0.50
Pc2- 192.168.0.51
Pc3- 192.168.0.52
Etc etc etc

All computers will be able to communicate, and the main client will be able to 'see' all the available servers

Is the latency compensated ? Are all plugins recalling perfectly ? I presume We have to start audioGridder server first ?
  Member 24.01.2014 39

I'm using AG for a while (mostly to be able to run a crowd of acustica audio plugins).

Latency is compensated by your DAW since the AG plugins reports the plugin chain+Lan latency. ( you can check each plugin instance latency in the AG panel)
You can choose the "block" count (x times your DAW buffer size) latency to be added for LAN operation (I'm running at 1 block)

Yes, each plugin parameter is recalled.

Preferably yes, but server will still scan and connect to AG plugin instances if launched afterward.

As explained above, computers have to be on the same Lan getaway (changing only the last 2 digits of the address). If you only got 2, they can be hooked up with a simple Ethernet cable.

thanks, I wasn't sure if the plug ins were all compensated for the delay, but does the ethernet cable to connect the external computers have to be crossed? or is the standard cable we use to connect the PC to the router ok? Is there any example video and configuration that explains the procedure?

A 'few' years ago, we had to use a crossover cable, when connecting 2 pcs with 1 cable.
Today, all nics (network cards) are able to 'auto negotiate' and use a standard, non-crossover cable, it's all automatic.
  Resident 12.03.2014 637

Another thing,
Assuming your computers only have 1 network card each, and you aren't using any wifi dongle,
1- you have no internet
2- there is local router or switch (that will act as dhcp servers to give one ip address to each connected device, pc, etc) , therefore, your computer will have no ip address.

So the computers can see each other using 1 cable between them, you're probably (surely) going to have to go to the network card settings, and manually set a fixed ip address, eg,
10.10.10.1 and 10.10.10.2

-You should also set the same workgroup name for both computers, eg, 'music_network'...
-Maybe you will also need to activate the 'files and printers discovery' (on OS such as win xp, we had to disable the 'easy/simple network' (something like that)
- finally, you will make sure no firewall rule will be blocking the app, as on each pc there will be 'in' and 'out' network traffic.

With 'all' this, both computers should be able to send and receive data, on the default port 55056

thanks 1000 I will try it between 2 PCs as soon as possible and I will update you

Here’s a question: does anyone know if Softube’s Console1 would work within AG? I’m assuming so, since it’s really just a plugin, but I’m not sure how the back-and-forth with the hardware controller would work in practice. Would I have to have the Console1 hardware connected via USB to the AG server machine? This could make for a really powerful setup if it worked without latency! Thanks guys!

I have installed in the same PC server and plugin, it´s working in Cubase but every time I open a plugin inside the AG plugin DAW stops playing up to when I close that plugin window.
What am I doing wrong?
