(As a disclaimer, I'm obviously not directing this entirely at this dev, as 99% of the companies that put out previews/demos of their compressors in action do the exact same thing. )

This is a really nice freebie compressor/limiter and gives fircomp v1-lowratio a run for it's money as a general use compressor.

It's always nice with free compressors, but I wouldn't go so far to say that it's comparable with FirComp. FirComp is a much more transparent and precise plug-in, while this one is a bit closer to character comps. I'd say that Hammer is more comparable to Reaper's stock compressor ReaComp.

Hammer has attack and release coupled with the ratio, so you can't change attack and release settings without affecting the ratio. The release is also a bit strange, with 50ms release being closer to 100ms in other similar comps, and a 10ms attack is closer to 6ms on other comps. This is probably because the attack and release is directly connected to the ratio. I would also have much preferred a threshold control to the input and output controls that hammer has (or at least being able to easily link input and output). Otherwise it's a pretty competent plug-in, and a great freebie.

Btw, one thing Hammer can do that FirComp can't is soft- and hard-clipping! Set attack and relase to 0ms, ratio to inf:1 and use the knee control to go from hard- to soft-clipping. Great for smashing drums, or distorting vocals

I like this mix of 1176 and distressor. Sounds smacky and very light on cpu, i'm using for some days and having a good experience. I'd give some spotlight to this little boy
