It is a set of deeply embedded instructions that run on the very most deepest part of the core of your CPU. For example, in the beginning, there had to be an 'instruction set' for mathematical operations like Divide/Multiply/Add/Subtract. Once these core operations were embedded in the CPU then future programs that ran on a higher level than the CPU could take advantage of them.

One example of this is the synth called Fathom. The developer offers a free copy that anyone can use via the Computer Music Magazine. But to take advantage of the 'lower' instruction set, one needs to buy the full program which costs about a 100 bucks. Well worth it in my opinion as it offers other features as well. But let's not get off course. If you buy this FULL version then it is much faster on any modern day CPU.

Some synths don't work at all if a required [instruction set] is not present. Say, Massive X by NI. So it's not just a case of things working more slow or more fast. It's a case of them working at all in some instances.

AVX2 is a set of advanced mathematical operations hard coded in to the core of the CPU die. A kind of advanced Assembly language that is built in. Computer programmers working in 'higher' level languages such as C++ can take advantage of these operations and make their programs run faster if this instruction set is available on the CPU core.

Really, most CPU's in existence and working today will be able to take advantage of this instruction set. Because most CPU's have it.

It's just that some programmers cripple it so that their programs run slower, even if this feature is available on the CPU. They make it not available for the CPU to 'read'.

What you are paying for here is a program that has not been crippled, so any modern CPU can read it.
