What about the ACOUSTIC ?

The reason why cars sound so "special" is small size AND "special" acoustic.
Some bass low mids will pass through structure, but mids and highs will "stay" inside.

Frequency response is useless : acoustic is key

You want a CHEAP test for mix ?
Use old crappy multimedia speakers, stack them (for mono test)
Combined with headphones (for linearity), it is the best cheap test ever :D

I think there is nothing wrong with that, the most important thing to consider is "mix on speaker/headphone you know really really really well".

I haven't upgrade my crappy $500 monitor speaker for more than 15 years now because I know every bit of it and how it interact with my room and what to consider, what to compensate and when I should switch to headphone just to get the details right. A lot of friends that come to my studio be like "wait, you still use this speaker ?".

I think that also applied to the legendary NS10 that sounds super shitty to be honest, but a real engineer knows what to listen to and still can't work without them.
