Analog Heritage
In 1954, a truly unique compressor appeared on the scene: the U17. Built by Allgemeine Telefon-Fabrik in Hamburg for the NWDR broadcasting network, only a few dozen units of this exemplary analog masterpiece were manufactured, making this gem one of the rarest compressors ever built.

Crossing Bridges
The U17 combines a solid state diode bridge using Germanium crystal semiconductors with all-tube and massive transformer-coupled amplification – a most sophisticated hybrid design. The best of both worlds!

The original hardware was intended to provide gentle and unobtrusive compression, and the plugin offers just that in the most beautiful way… but it also adds a couple of serious setscrews, mutating the gentleman into a veritable two-face.

A preceding soft clipper adds pleasant coloration while taming heavy transients before entering the actual compressor, which can blend from gentle and transparent to straight and aggressive operation with its powerful Torque control. i was very curios about this. i need something to smoothen out the transients without grit and mud, but don't want to complicate myself with de-essers, and don't like how transient shapers affect the sound. i'm really curious to see what it does. thanks!

To smoothen out the transients without mud and some grit you need a clipper with 4-8x oversampling. More oversampling equals less grit and clippers aren't as muddy as limiters. Compressor can accentuate transients [nicely] or suppress them a bit which will always sound more or less muddy. You're probably referring to the former. That's how I generally use compressors - to accentuate transients to taste.

This sounds like a serious tone machine as much or more it is as a way to knock a few decibels off the top of a signal. Germanium transistors are warmer than silicon are and near impossible to match, so each unit that they are/were used in will sound inherently different. I wonder how this version will translate to a vst plugin.

Historic Background

But what do we know about this ethereal device other than it being rare like a unicorn? Introduced in 1954, the U17 was custom built for the post-war NWDR broadcasting network based on circuitry developed by its own central engineering department. The executing manufacturer was Allgemeine Telefon-Fabrik GmbH which was based in the city of Hamburg, located in northern Germany.

Germanium Diodes
The U17 circuit employs six DS62 Germanium crystal diodes: Four of them are wired in a bridge configuration to implement the floating gain reduction circuit which can also be found in later units such as the Siemens U276 or the iconic Neve 33609.

With its introduction in the early 1950s, when remote cut-off tubes where the only other technology available in order to achieve voltage controlled amplification, this design allowed for a low component count and a minimum of required maintenance. The other two diodes can be found in the envelope detector and time-constant network regulating the aforementioned gain controller in a feed-forward configuration.

Tested and figured the plugin is okay. It's just I think there are atleast 3 plugins with similar style that is IMO better sounding than this one:

1) Softube Chandler Germanium
2) Kush Silika
3) Arturia Comp-DIODE

try them up and compare yourself.

To all the 0VU=-18dB FS disciples, this one seems to be calibrated to -10. ;-)

The pretty well hidden black screw in the VU meter can be turned to input, output and GR.

Thanks to Stevie Dude I made a short comparision to SILIKA.
IMHO, SILIKA sounds more snappy, lively and open on stuff with an audible attack phase, whereas on pad-like stuff U17 behaved more smoothly.

Oh, and it's running on Win7.
