Rob Papen is a well-known sound designer from the Netherlands and many of his sounds and plug-ins have become legendary. In the 90s he supplied several sound sets for the Microwave 1, which had then just seen the light of day. His “Techno” and “Signature” cards inspired many users and can therefore be heard on countless productions of the 90s. The two sound sets have now been freshly reworked by Rob Papen and optimized on the Waldorf M, for the Waldorf M.

Introduced in 1983, the JX-Programmable-Preset-Polyphonic analog synth from Roland was a big hit. Released alongside the Jupiter-6, both synths had a second oscillator which set them apart from the Juno. The JX-3P featured a button-only front panel and the classic chorus, whereas the Jupiter retained the knob and faders but had no built in effects.

Pathways is a sample-based Max for Live instrument that allows users to draw paths (made of small points) for sample playback over a spectrogram interface. The playback path (in blue) is based on which points were drawn first to last, allowing for all kinds of linear and nonlinear playback possibilities. It offers two playback modes that support a variable rate of playback (and freezing) without altering the pitch.

You can select how many notes are in an arpeggiated “chord” created off of the audio input. Additionally, you can create up to 16 different chords that can transition via a Markov Chain (a probabilistic transition from chord to chord).

Iota is a granular looper that allows drawing of individual loops (as boxes) or grains over a spectrogram. The position and dimensions of the boxes correspond to the filtering and playback range of each loop. This allows for an intuitive approach to looping. Additionally, each loop's parameters can be individually set (including pitch, fade window, delay, panning, and gain).

The warm, distinctive sound of this home-made string experiment.

For this release, I’ve recorded it both ways – plucked with bare hands for a nice intimate sound – and played with a pick. As you will hear, that gives quite a different sound. The two articulations sound especially good together. There’s also a third FX layer which is the plucked sound but with some added chorus and reverb.

These Pif synths were designed for children. They were produced from roughly 1989-1993 in a city called Ромны in the Ukraine. The factory that produced them, Роменский завод АТС, specialized in industrial telephone equipment, but also made several consumer products including this synthesizer.
