Best way to pull a 80's mainstream sound is flood the mix in reverb, what a horrible period (sound wise) for music

EHHH..Serious? I always thought the 80ies (not that Pia Zadora, Michel Jackson etc) was one of the most inspiring synth episodes in music history...together with the late 70ies. Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Human League (first 3 albums), Soft Cell, Yazoo, Depeche Mode (first of all when you see beginning of sampling), Cabaret Voltaire, Yello etc...the 90ies brought nothing new regarding synth sounds..same as the last decade.

Not to mention it saw the creation of the gated reverb sound which is so integral to Industrial music.

Well Peter Gabriel the creator of the gated reverb was mainstream but I don't know if we could ever consider Industrial mainstream. I think it's better that way, it's the only way we've been able to save a genre from annihilation by the braindead masses. Still remember those imports man, such a fertile period for music. New Beat, EBM and straight Industrial. People joke that there must have been crushed up circuit boards in all the heroin coming out of Belgium, Canada and Germany.

I'm not so sure Peter Gabriel was or is mainstream. His music has sveral layers. Certainly was not considered mainstream by the Industry, Atlantic Records refused to release his third album. "Not commercial". It's easy now to say he's mainstream. The man has a career of 40 years. And that fucking gated reverb was necessary in the context of his music. That's the difference between an artist and a simple (and maybe a good) musician.

As far as I'm informed, the audio engineer put a reverb into the insert of the tom tracks or group and accidentally activated the gate of the SSL. Back then the SSL was a totally new beast and he just fucked up, but it sounded totally cool, so they left it. And I always thought, it was a Phil Collins song… (Wasn't it In The Air Tonight)
Am I wrong?

Yes, Phil Collins put this in "In the air tonight". I remember an interview where Collins sais he asked Gabriel to use it, because they were working on a Gabriel's record. My point is, these guys were searching for something. Not using something. If they founded something by accident is one of the consecuences of that search.

@Mark1

i said soundwise, the 80's had a particular sound, you mentioned bands names not me. But maybe that sound was something you enjoyed.

Reading and watching interviews by a lot of 80's bands that particular reverb sound in retrospect was something they looked back on as overused and some say horrible period of their lives.

And i agree about the gorrow goroow gorrow brakka brakka weehhe

ZEBRA has some good sounds – just the GUI design is very "color shy". I mean gray can be cool combined with firm colors.
