Further, still outside of the technical discussion, I'd argue that this is a close cousin to the threads that pop up every time an analogue emulation plugin is released, with the debate being, if something doesn't match up exactly to the hardware, is it unusable trash made by a worthless excuse for a developer? Unsurprisingly, these are the ridiculously extreme opinions of some people, especially now in this day and age of zero middle ground, where everyone's gotta be on one. I'd argue that, while it's interesting to know whether or not something is accurate to it's source's behaviour (and if it isn't, why it isn't,) as long as it seems apparent that the dev didn't just take a lazy route to completion to snag cash out your wallet, it's not necessary for a digital tool to mimic a piece of hardware exactly for it to be useful. I often use PtFR captures (which I've often tested first from AZ, to see how useful they are to whatever I'm working on, but paid for if I use them,) because I find them useful for any number of things. One thing I don't use them for is compression in the form of an actual, channel-topping compressor. Why? Because I know what they are. My soon-to-be-rambling point here is that I'd argue that only the completely uninformed are truly ignorant as to what captures are, and how the different type of captures differ in what they're able to do. So, sure—warn those new to audio production about what these captures can and *can't do, and be specific, teach them, but considering the wide variety of music creators and how everyone gets down with their own bad selves, it's simply arrogant to advise people not to support PtFR just because you find their presentation misleading.
