"Clicks" usually refer to the high frequency portion of a kick drum, often available as separately EQed and shortened samples (though they're easy to make yourself). Depending on the genre or sound you're going for, the high end transient provides necessary punch to cut through a dense or sub heavy mix, which is why a good collection of clicks is great to have. This is why most people layer their kick drums, finding a nice punchy top that works well with a low/low-mid toned sound.
