The Catnip tag is actually a joke more than a group, I had a team name selected but then realized that it's really good and I might want to release something musical under that name so I scrapped it.

Personally i like some of Skrillexs stuff (Not much but still) but what gives us the right to judge him based on his music ?

No but really, I'm just judging for myself. You're free to like whoever you want.

Algood man just saying, suppose putting yourself in the spotlight that their is always going to be haters. Just look at Jb, now most people can right a paragraph of shit about him

There are people that say shit just to hate on someone, I think you know full well that I'm not one of those people. The fact that Skrillex won a few Grammy's while artists with infinitely greater talent, skill. musical abilities have to work other jobs just to pay their bills is the epitome of everything wrong with music today. It's just all flash and no substance, that's the best way I can put it.

Yeah, Skrillex ain't all bad, but a lot of his stuff may still deserve a couple of jokes.

I haven't heard a single song that I would pass as worthy of the time it took to suffer through. In fact I can't even have that played in my vicinity or I am forced to run amok through the streets decapitating people by the thousands, it's a real problem. That meme is so true and funny. screenshot

I've seen that video before. I'm not judging him as a human being, he could be the best guy ever but his stuff sucks, he looks like a cunt and he's just promoting vapid music. Industrial also gets noisy but it was a genre built on some kind of substance either musically or socially:
The birth of industrial music was a response to "an age [in which] the access and control of information were becoming the primary tools of power." At its birth, the genre of industrial music was different from any other music, and its use of technology and disturbing lyrics and themes to tear apart preconceptions about the necessary rules of musical form supports the suggestion that industrial music is modernist music. The artists themselves made these goals explicit, even drawing connections to social changes they wished to argue for through their music.

This is the best way I can convey it:
Nevertheless the passions, whether violent or not, should never be so expressed as to reach the point of causing disgust; and music, even in situations of the greatest horror, should never be painful to the ear but should flatter and charm it, and thereby always remain music.
-Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

But Mozart forgot about one thing there, that the human perception is extremely subjective.
Something that sounds painful and disgusting to one person may be amazing for someone else. Like my parents thought Prodigy and NiN was awful noise, but to me it sounded great. Not to mention things like Skinny Puppy or Peace Love And Pitbulls.
Or my older brother who's a rock fan, he thought Numan and Depeche was crap but I totally loved it.
Sure it's kinda sad that the most vapid and shallow stuff always get the most fortune and fame, but alternative stuff isn't meant to be a part of that huge money making machine anyway so it's just the way this crazy world works.

It is extremely subjective but we can't argue that Skrillex's music isn't about anything. Skinny Puppy may be harsh but their music is A) not only WAY more meaningful but also B) a hell of a lot more melodic than Skrillex and C) people will still be listening to it 20 years from now while Skrillex is just a fad.

This article makes some good points but of real interest were the comments: Why Does America Love Skrillex?

Here's an excerpt from the article itself:
One reason for this is that the acts we’re talking about are not, generally speaking, interested in offering some refined or studious advancement on the long, rich, soulful history of electronic dance music. Skrillex’s work, in particular, is a lot more of a pile-up, as if someone’s picked all the most obviously, superficially cool and high-impact parts of a dozen different genres, dredged them in stimulants, and started mashing them against one another—the same way Quentin Tarantino can rifle through a dozen film genres and borrow all the best fight scenes. There’s Daft Punk’s insistent pop-dance; the blocky neon blips of electro; the melodic buzz of old video games; the gushy, sentimental melodies of trance; the high-speed skip and glitch of Aphex Twin; the glammy pop feel of L.A. party music—all things that are easy to like. And when you mush them all together into one clanging, high-octane stew, they become extremely easy to like, whether or not the listener has ever known or cared about electronic music before. Not elegant, deep, or moving, but very easy to get a thrill out of.

This is exactly what I hate about it, it's like a 15 car pileup with no slickness, no nuance...nothing. Just a pile of vapid flash for mainstream consumption.

One of the comments was really great but it seems to have been removed so I'm uncensoring it since it was spot fucking on. I have omitted the last sentence because it was too harsh:
Why Does America Like Skrillex? The answer to that is pretty simple, America has bad taste. Really bad taste. In everything.

Our top-grossing movies are Transformers, The Smurfs, Squeakquels, and whatever Adam Sandler just shat out. We numb ourselves with TV like Jersey Shore and "Real" Housewives. Mainstream radio is narcissistic, repetitive, and completely derivative garbage. The majority of America has no gauge for actual talent- artists with a sense of nuance or the slightest bit of wit. No- most people just like whatever appeals to the lowest common denominator, the equivalent of something shiny.

I've followed electronic music for 16 years now, and it always happens the same way. Exciting new genres bubble up from the European underground scene thanks to a couple of innovators and some key clubs. Then there's a fertile period where some really great releases come out. Then as soon as the scene gets the tiniest bit of mainstream attention, the wannabes come out of the woodwork. The defining elements of the genre become caricatures. Authenticity vanishes. The mainstream loves it for a year. Then it becomes a cliche.

It happened with trip-hop, drum & bass, progressive house, garage, and now with dubstep. Remember when Britiney and N'Sync enlisted BT as a producer? Remember when N'sync did a couple of "Garage" tracks? Or when Madonna enlisted William Orbit to make Ray of Light (her best album) or worse, when she straight-up stole Vogue-ing from the black transexual house music scene and said "it doesn't matter if you're black or white, if you're a boy or a girl"?. Brit-brit and Rihanna are now releasing tracks with "Dubsteppy" breakdowns. Beiber's next. It's embarrassing. But the American youth eat it up, with no concern or care for actually learning the roots of a genre.

Pop music always exploits and waters down the authenticity of underground music. The story is so old now. All these kids that think they're into dubstep would probably be really confused if they heard Horsepower Productions or Pinch.

Skrillex is popular because he's the equivalent of eating one of everything from the McDonald's Dollar menu. He combines the most derivative elements of some now-passe EDM genres- the synthetic emotional cheese of trance, the agressive drill n bass of IDM, and the "wobble" or dubstep- with absolutely no ear for subtlety, nuance, or dynamics.

Yeah man, you know I agree with all of the opinions in your latest comment. But it just underlines the fact that a lot of ppl truly do like McDonalds and it's musical equivalents, so to them it doesn't taste and sound like totally watered down crap. They really enjoy it and even if I don't agree I can understand it to some degree. I mean, I also think that Ray Of Light is a decent album even though I personally think Strange Cargo is a 100 times better and should deserve a lot more listeners.

Skrillex and Miley Cyrus have a huge audience and make lots of money cause that is their major purpose. But that is not the purpose of artists like Skinny Puppy, so in a twisted way things are as they must be in a world where greed is the most rewarded feature. The most shallow and stupid stuff will always have a lot of success because greed is stupid.
