The sound of R&B music has always reflected the generation of the artists creating it. From its soulful, politically conscious movement in the 70’s created by artists like Marvin Gaye, to its smooth, quiet storm sounds of the 80’s with crooners like Luther Vandross, we have enjoyed many different facets of R&B over the years. We have even specifically covered these specific eras in several of our releases (Port Rich Vol .6, 12th and Vine, 7XD, Silent Storm). Fast-forwarding to today, R&B has taken a far more varied and eclectic approach. Musicians like Solange, H.E.R., and Frank Ocean who years ago would have been considered just an alternative listen, are now trailblazers and leaders within the genre.

Soul Surplus's “Legacy” series highlights musicians of high prowess and creativity. For the first sample collection in this series, we visited Gradwell House Recording Studios in New Jersey with Leonard “Pudge” Tribbett. Equipped with a large live-room, a control with a vintage SSL console, API outboard preamps, and the best ribbon mics money can afford, we recorded a little over 51 loops (each in 3 different textures, totaling 153 loops in all), and 35 one-shots.

Throughout history, we have seen rock and roll take on many different forms. Grunge, indie, blues, metal, psychedelic, and soft rock all have their roots in rock and roll. Our sample collection titled “Crimson Soul” focuses on the latter 2 sub- genres, which were both prevalent through the 1970ʼs. “Crimson Soul” draws inspiration from bands like Fleetwood Mac, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Pink Floyd.

The name “Gamble and Huff” was synonymous with a countless number of major hits in the 70ʼs. The production duo was a force to be reckoned with, with a soulful sound that w's embraced all over the world. If youʼre still not familiar, groups like The Jackson 5, The Stylistics, and The OʼJays should ring a bell. Gamble and Huff recorded these chart-topping hits right here in Philadelphia at Sigma Sound Studios on 12th Street.

Adam Monroe's Wurlitzer virtual instrument plugin was sampled from an "early model" 1970's Wurlitzer 200A electronic piano. The process began by close-miking the piano with Beyerdynamic MC930 condenser microphones on the Wurlitzer's built-in speakers, and an AEA R84 Ribbon Mic on the line-out signal through a Fender Deluxe Reverb Amp. These signals were fed into Grace M101 and AEA TRP Preamps respectively.

Adam Monroe's Rotary Organ was sampled from a Hammond M3 tonewheel Organ. The end goal was to simulate the sound of a Hammondnd B3 organ with rotating Leslie Speaker inside of a VST/AU/AAX plugin. Every drawbar on every note was sampled individually via the organ's built-in speaker through a Neumann TLM 102 microphone.
