There is always a drop in proper underground house music. Same goes for all the other styles of EDM. However if you are referring to the commercial versions of these styles then yes there is rarely a drop (breakdown). Breakdowns just don't sound right on commercial prime time radio but in a club or festival it helps to give a track that is in some cases about 7 minutes long a sense of journey and atmosphere. A good breakdown is required in underground EDM and for the clubber when things slam back in after a good build up it is a very euphoric experience. Not many clubbers will thank you if you lave out the drop. Imagine a 7 minute long track that didn't have such dynamics wow

Huh? Underground House music would be? I hope you're saying Chicago, New York/Jersey, styles. And most of the older songs didn't have drops that's techno and trance. Those are played for the euphoric experience go to deephousepage and listen to some mixes and show me a handful of drops, then I'll believe you, LOL. Peace.
Let there be HOUSE!

I know this is and old post but I feel I have to respond. Yeah sure very early house music or rave rarely had massive breakdowns and build ups but they did at least have a form of a middle 8 or even 2 and 4 bar breaks. That production trick developed on as does most techniques in music creation. Even classical music troughs and peaks. Imagine any style of music that had no crescendo or a quiet section to create atmosphere. It would be pretty bland for lacking in dynamics (elektro house lol). My point wasn't about whether drops exist or not. My point was and still is that massive breakdowns and the inevitable rise are used for tracks that are not "initially" intended for commercial radio play. If a strictly underground tune goes massive with the underground clubbing public then it will be, if snatched up by a major label, edited down for commercial consumption. The big breakdown will be halved or the track itself will be structured in a more commercial no more that 4 minutes long way. Commercial DJ's just don't have enough time within their hour or 2 slot to play tracks that last in excess of 6 or 7 minutes and most of them wouldn't know a mix in or mix out in if it slapped then in the face. Today's Deep house, Tech House, Nu Garage, hell anything house related (which all dance music has evolved from) now have good musical breakdowns and build ups. Just have a peek at soundcloud and you will realise that breakdowns and build ups aren't the sole domain of trance and techno. The lines between different genre are and have been blurred for quite some time. Here's a link to an EP released by myself and Wilson

Although the 3 tracks being demoed have been mixed into one another I can assure you they all have breakdowns and build ups. They are meant for the floor and not the radio. If someone makes me an offer I cant refuse then I'll edit them down for commercial air play in a heartbeat :)
