Fab mixes an Indie Pop song from scratch to finish with a hybrid list of hardware units and plugins

In this one hour and twenty seven point three minutes extravaganza Fab mixes a new track from Indie Pop band Plastic Days.

Starting from scratch and explaining every step he takes and every choice he makes (Every breath he takes, every move he makes, oh can’t you seeeeeee....), he coaxes the track from rough mix to final mix using hardware eqs and compressors, many different plugins, analog summing, and a great array of tricks to make the song shine. Instruments dealt with range from vocals to bass, drums, guitars and keyboards (Oolala).

Hardware used : Dangerous 2-Bus, Roger Schult EQs, RockRuepel Comp1, ELI Fatso, Chandler TG1, Mercury Pultec EQH1, Dangerous BAX EQ

Software used : ProTools HD9, Oxford EQ, Oxford Dynamics, Oxford Reverb, UAD Room Simulator, UAD EMT140, UAD Pultec, UAD 1176, UAD Fairchild, UAD Little Labs, UAD Precision EQ, Soundtoys Echoboy, Soundtoys PhaseMistress, Softube Reverb, Avid Expander Gate

The attached zip file contains the original uncompressed files of the session.

Please download it and import these files in the DAW you use to make music (It does not necessarily have to be Pro Tools!) This way you can practice your skills and mix this song using your own tastes, tools, plug-ins and the guidelines provided in this video.

Seems like he spends all his money on overpriced hardware and software. There's so many cheap and free alternatives to all that stuff that would give the same results. It's all in the ears.

satan213, no bro, software it's not the same as hardware... I have a recording friend (grammy mixing winner) and he said to me "almost any hardware it's way better than software" And well, Fab has some good hardware toys...
Be grateful for what you have.

His hardware is awesome and I don't think that cheap solutions were available in the time when he was starting out, he clearly made his way using that stuff all this time and the same ones are paying (themselves) his rent wink

But, whatever keeps you sleep at night wink

@xcore: still singing the same old tune. Wake up bro, hardware is so cheap these days, nobody wants to buy it any more, and me neither. It's elitist's territory, but everything can be done with software these days so nicely. I still think a few good pieces of hardware is worth keeping though, just for the old times' "warmth" sake.

SineWave,

I hope that by "elitist" you mean "Pro as Shite" and calling hardware cheap is normal if your referring to actual cheap hardware. The actual pro stuff is on the very expensive side in my opinion. I understand that technology is getting better and better each year, but I still think its gonna be a while before computers completely take over the studio. I'll also speak on behalf of about 90 percent of us here and state that when all is said and done, its all about that "warm" sound. Peace, mate mates
