Lately I'm rather disappointed with a lot of tutorials - as my knowledge grows day by day most beginner and intermediate stuff is quite a waste of time now. There's not much really advanced stuff out there, too much "show and tell" stuff.

But if I once will start using Sibelius I'll be happy to have that one.

If i may ask, i would like to know your pros and cons between Sibelius and Finale. I'm not asking which one do you think is better, but just why do you use one and not the other (if you've checked the two). This is because i will have to use a music notator very soon and i would like to know different and serious real user's opinions about it.

Thanks a lot in advance! mates

BTW, thanks for this tuts Horsemen (even if - as articstorm says - ill never have time to watch all these tuts until i die) wink

I'm very sorry to disagree with you. IMHO even in beginner tuts one can discover some things he or she didn't knew or a better way to do things one thought that he or she knew the best way to do it. Those who really want to learn never say "I already know this or that" but they go everywhere with an open mind to learn even from the most ignorant person in the world.

Never say "i know" because there are a lot of things you don't know and some of those things may be hidden in one of those beginner or intermediate tutorials you disregard ... Why not ?

Regards! mates

That's absolutely true, but the pure amount of useful hints decreases with growing knowledge. If I had all the time in the world I would not matter at all, but sometimes it's just not efficient to watch two hours of beginner video for one new trick.

I'd love to work with Sibelius, but I just don't have the time for it. But I also would like to know which notation software is recommended, Finale or Sibelius. There's this ad in Computer Music Magazine where Finale is mocking Sibelius, what's with that?

Thanks for your answer. Personally i tried one of the first versions of Sibelius long long time ago just for fun and i agree with you that Finale then was far superior and stable than Sibelius. On the other hand, my music teacher (who's a composer too) uses Finale for Mac since version 3 i think, and he's very happy now with v2012. I've tried to tell him to give Sibelius 7 a try but he's reluctant to do it. So, i think a better way is to try it myself and then have a talk trying to find together what are the best points in one and the other. Personally i did not tried Sibelius 7 (Finale 2012 a little bit) but i've watched some videos in Youtube and i would agree with you (at least by now) with the two characteristics you point out. BTW, do you know if Finale can import Sibelius files and viceversa?.

@docx1

Agree with you that the sickness of our times is the lack of time and hence the urge in wanting everything very quick otherwise we have the very bad feeling that we are wasting our time which inevitably ends in a lot of stress, anger against others and so on (we have a prove of that everyday in many of the posts that are posted here in AudioZ). Anyway, i understand much better now what you previously said about "is quite a waste of time". So, thanks for clarifying this. On the other hand, i buy Computer Music (spanish edition) every month and never noticed the advert you mention about Finale versus Sibelius dunno anyway i will look more carefully the magazines i have, but if you could point me at some place in internet will be much better as i'm very interested in look at it.

BTW, for what you say i guess you buy (or download) computer music (sorry article is in Future Music) every month too ... What i want you to say is that in the november spanish edition i've found a very interesting article called "Limit your options with Ableton Live 8" (don't know if it exist also in the english edition)... Have you read it ?. I liked very much when it recommends "forget any 3rd party plug-ins and try to work only with the plug-ins that come with live" wink. Follow this link to listen and watch professor Robert Henke (co-founder of Ableton) in a very interesting lecture at IET London (March 2012) on which the article mentioned above is based on.

Kind Regards! mates

I'm very sorry but i'm afraid that i still don't know anything about Photoscore and AudioScore, give me some time to watch the video-tut Horsemen has upload so kindly for all of us yes Anyway, i'm very grateful for your feedback! wink

P.S.: I'm going to install Sibelius 7 for Mac right now and start watching the videos. I'll let you know my progress in a very few moments! yes

@Millenium

Well, you can ask me whatever you want now because i've become a Sibelius 7 expert already! rofl Nah,i'm joking! tongue ... Well, i've started Sibelius for the first time and after 6 or 7 crashes because some AUs and VSTs plug-ins yes , i've created my first score. My first impression is that i've found Sibelius more interface intuitive than Finale (i've needed only to watch the introductory video (interface introduction) to start doing basic things without further info. Things i've missed by now is real time editing (i mean while playing - don't know if this can be configured somehow), and selecting only with the mouse (i.e. no need to press cmd key - in this case i would have preferred <space + mouse> to move the score, like in Photoshop (again i don't know if this can be configured to act this way)). EDIT: Forgot to mention one thing i liked very much: the Ideas option which acts as a kind of repository of musical ideas for later use (very useful i think).

BTW, i know already what are Photoscore and Audioscore. Unfortunately the version i downloaded of Sibelius (7.1.3) doesn't install none of them (lite versions, of course). Fortunately a quick search in my HDs reveled that i already have both in Ultimate7 version in case i would have need of any of them.

Well, time to continue messing around with Sibelius (which i like)! phones

@Millenium (added after 7 hours)

After having watch half or so of the videos while trying everything i've decided to use Sibelius for my works. I can tell you now that i fully agree with your two points above about Finale versus Sibelius. Thanks a lot for your feedback which has been of great help in my wish to give Sibelius a try.

Time to go to sleep now ... Kind Regards! mates
