Today we're re-scoring the trailer for a really exciting upcoming indie film called 'Punch' using the fundamental principles of epic trailer music.

To ensure we cover all the fundamentals of music creation, we'll be building chords into strong progressions that we'll layer with interesting harmonics and build until.. we arrive at... the drop... BWAAAAAAH.

By popular request, this class will include instruction on creating your very own BWAAAH that you can implement into your upcoming film or trailer score. There was no BWAAAH in the original version of this trailer (nor does their need to be) but adding one has drastically altered the tone of the trailer and made it far darker and grittier, and I like it!

If you join in on this class you can expect to learn more about

•1. Building a chord progression that makes musical sense for its key
•2. Layering instruments
•3. Adding automation to your plugins
•4. Working synths and instruments together
•5. Creating tone and mood with music

If that sounds exciting to you then join us! I'll be using Ableton Live 11, Spitfire Audio plugins, SoundShifter by Waves, and Valhalla Supermassive. This course is perfect for beginners and anyone else looking for a few pointers in areas they'd like to improve on.

The film Punch stars Conan Hayes and Jordan Oosterhof
It premiers in the US on March 10th 2023 and was directed by Welby Ings

The title points out that what is in vogue is the epic theme, but the tutor does not reveal what he calls epic, nor how or why the musical genre chosen would be epic. So, I realized that more than half of the material he composed does not have what would first be conceptualized as epic, although the lighthearted approach even produces an interesting effect (with a piano following the hip-hop anthem aesthetic), which he calls inspiring, quite different from what is commonly called an epic (I was wondering: is hip-hop anthem the "new epic"?). Then, at the very end of the trailer, he goes for a BRAAAM approach that even matches the title. The problem is that he doesn't talk about the chosen musical tempo (he doesn't even mention it) and its relationship with the rhythm of the trailer images. Nor does he explain the relationship between timbre and epic character. Between accentuation and the epic (or minimally something about the notes chosen in the section he calls BWAAAAHHH=super epic). Therefore, I found the tutor's comments generic and even somewhat vague, simplistic. Despite being a short-lived material, it has a very simplistic content, in a very on-the-fly approach and, if I had paid for the material, I would not like the investment made, just because it's a not very explanatory tutorial. The tutor missed a good chance to delve deeper into the choices he made. It's ok to choose a simpler and more current approach, but even what is simple could have been better explained.
