Did we watch the same videos? I'm not all the way through yet so I don't know whether she uses Ozone on each track or not -- there doesn't appear any evidence of it in the early episodes, but perhaps she does at the mixdown stage? I've no idea. But in eps. 2 and 3 she definitely does individual EQing on the kick and bass tracks. She claims that she doesn't cut the sub-frequencies, but uses a low-end shelf to reduce them (because, as you point out, they get further reduced on the low-end bus and on the master).

Is this a viable approach? I've no idea? I don't much care because I'm interested in listening to how different people work and trying out their ideas myself.

When I see what she looks like, I do wonder whether she's the one doing the whole track, but she appears to talk with confidence and authority about how she makes the decisions she makes. And she's making techno, FFS. It's not rocket science. All she'd need to do is watch a handful of tutorials and regurgitate what she learned from doing that. (Which is my sense of what she actually is doing here -- but I'm not sure how different that is to anyone else.)

I've not seen anything especially 'wrong' so far. She makes a big deal about tuning her kicks. That's one of those things you learn from shitty tutorials.

OK, I just skimmed the other videos I hadn't watched yet. She uses Ozone 9's EQ on her pads, and the Tape Machine and Maximizer on her Master Channel. But that's it. That's hardly using Ozone on every track -- and doesn't strike me as especially wrong. She does a pretty good job of defending her aesthetic choices in respect of those decisions.

She also definitely does some gain staging in the last video. It might not be very sophisticated, but that's also true of most of the techno tutorials I've watched.

While I agree with your general point about the quality of Sonic Academy videos (and I thought this was a pretty crap tune to be unpicking) the guys who run that operation are pretty clued up. I'm sure they wouldn't be releasing content without having watched it and raising the issue with the creator if what they were teaching was absolute nonsense.

TLDR: Someone is wrong on the internet. I must write a 1500 word essay to correct them.
