PUREMIX Mick Guzauski Mixing Lifeboats TUTORiAL-SYNTHiC4TE screenshot
SYNTHiC4TE | Jan 13 2019 | 1.30 GB
In Episode 3 of our Lifeboats Series, Legendary Mixer, Mick Guzauski, opens the multitrack for Will Knox’s Lifeboats onto his Avid S6 console and takes us all the way from hearing the song for the first time, through to a completed mix with his signature sound imprinted upon it.

See How Mick:

Sets up his Avid S6 console for effortless navigation
Adds rhythm and movement to percussive synth parts with creative delays
Uses manual gating to achieve the right feel on a kick drum
Carefully crafts piano reverbs
Uses multiple reverbs to build unique spaces and textures for individual instruments
Sculpts the top end of the mix using the Manley Massive Passive
Uses a Fairchild 670 to slow down transients and thicken the drum bus

He looks like a male version of Jo Brand the comedian.

Watched this and the CLA one, ol mick really needs to lose some weight he can barely get close to his S6. I know he's a great mixer and all but he looks dumb on this vid, and is mincing around on that controller with fat finger presses and stupid holds on the faders like some noob, it was quite off putting to watch how dumb he looked, maybe it's just the quadruple chins making him seem that way but...

FTR I've used an S6 and ICON/DCommand (which I prefer) and I don't sit there like I've just discovered how to plug it in. And he's a world class mixer. Weird.

Not a big CLA fan but his mix sounded 10x better than Micks here who basically left it sounded like a polished demo/rough mix, and also left some awful out of tune synth line in that CLA sent right to the background.

OK I'm sure this is interesting to nobody but me but I've since watched scheps and...

I noticed

. His vocal mix was pretty bad/annoying and sounded unmixed.
.The overall mix didn't go anywhere exciting (the song is pretty boring though)
.It felt a little too dry and the vocal stood out and didn't sound pleasing

Other than that I still think his base music mix was more solid than Micks (mick's sounds really unpolished to me... very very slack). Mick's mix lacked cohesion and a glued together feel, that doesn't surprise me based on what he did (or didn't do) to it. I think he was more into his S6 (D-command is better btw ;) ) than the song.

But with Mick:

. His vocal mix was a bit too wet/delay was too prominent
.His drums were TOO LOUD
.His mix was a bit muddy and lacking punch
.He had the synth (out of tune one) too loud

So I need to go back and check CLA again but I'm pretty certain he still nailed it best, had some size, power, width, magic combining the best of scheps and mick without the drawbacks. I don't usually like CLA's mixes that much so I'm surprised but I think as it's quite a dull song (sorry to the artist) I think CLA's push was needed to make something decent out of it.

Not seen Fabs not sure if it's on here.

With Scheps I think he's a bit lazy, he didn't go the extra mile like CLA to tidy up timings, tunings, or dress it up much. Mick didn't either. Scheps I think stays to constrained by his template and sometimes the song needs something different, he admits he's lazy and I think it shows in that mix.

To me CLA's is the only one that 'sounds like a record', if I'd mixed the other two I'd be unhappy and think I wasn't done yet. They still sound like unfinished/boring mixes to me! It has nothing to do with hardware vs software either, just their tastes I guess. Personally I didn't love any of the mixes and would mix it myself better (imo) itb + hybrid outboard ;) and maybe will give it a shot with the stems included.

Wish they had done this with a better song with more going on.

1. CLA (most record like/more exciting but a bit glossy/fake)
2. Scheps (most solid/organic but slightly boring)
3. Mick (to me it sounds totally not mixed, loose and non-record like)

Fab?
